ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss petitions challenging the 18th and 21st amendments as he spoke on the floor of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Sharif said the apex court had declared military courts legal which would discourage terrorists and strengthen the fight against them.

“Extra ordinary circumstances require extra ordinary decisions,” the prime minister said.

Prime Minister Sharif added today was an important day for Pakistan’s politics, democracy and history, adding the country’s war against terrorism would benefit from the court’s decision.

The prime minister also said his government would not support motions seeking to de-seat Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif asked Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to withdraw their resolutions against the PTI.

He, however, deplored the language PTI chairman Imran Khan used against Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Tuesday.

Nawaz Sharif said democracy and the country suffer when decisions are taken on the streets. “We have to maintain atmosphere of unanimity.”

The prime minister said Parliament was the only appropriate forum to resolve issues whether they are small or big.
