ISLAMABAD: Heaving a sigh of relief, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said Thursday that the inquiry report by the judicial commission had vindicated his party of allegations of rigging in the 2013 general elections.

"It has been proved today that our hands were clean. We gave them everything because we were convinced of our innocence. The truth remained the truth and falsehood was defeated," the prime minister said in a statement today.

Sharif’s statement came shortly after he chaired a consultative meeting of legal experts, advisers and federal ministers to mull over legal and constitutional aspects raised in the commission's detailed report.

The prime minister is scheduled to address the nation again later today at 7:00PM in which he will take the nation into confidence over the judicial commission’s report.

Sources say the prime minister is expected to congratulate the nation on the decision of the inquiry commission, and also invite PTI chairman Imran Khan to work together for strengthening democracy.

The three-member judicial commission headed by Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk in its detailed report sent to the Ministry of Law on Wednesday rejected all the three allegations of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on rigging in the 2013 general elections.

The commission was formed after long-running protests by the PTI last year paralyzed the federal capital and forced the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government to agree on initiating a judicial inquiry into the PTI's complaints of rigging and mass electoral irregularities.

The three main allegations of the PTI included organised rigging in the 2013 general elections, non-transparent polling and theft of the public mandate. But the detailed report by the commission has rejected the allegations, saying there were irregularities to the extent of the Election Commission but they did not constitute a reflection of a deviation from the public mandate.
