KARACHI: The Rangers paramilitary force has claimed to have gunned down five suspects in an ‘encounter’ in the city’s Liyari, Chakiwara and Bihar Colony neighbourhoods in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to a spokesman for Rangers, the suspects belonged to Uzair Baloch and Baba Ladla groups of Lyari gang war and were wanted in several cases of extortion and targeted killing.
Karachi, the financial hub of the country, has been marred by ethnic, sectarian and political violence for decades.
Police and Rangers have been carrying out an operation against criminals and terrorists for the last two years and have intensified their actions following an attack on a bus of the Ismaili community that killed at least 46 people in May earlier this year.
