12,400 troops to be deployed for LB elections in cantonments

RAWALPINDI: 12,400 troops of the Pakistan Army and Rangers will be deployed for local bodies elections scheduled to take place in 42 cantonments across the country on 25 April, the ISPR said in a statement.

According to the ISPR, troops have been requisitioned by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and will ensure security and assist the ECP in the smooth conduct of elections.

Polling for LB elections in cantonments will commence at 8:00AM on Saturday and will continue till 5:00PM without any break.

According to the ECP, 199 wards have been formed in 42 cantonments across the country and election for one seat will be held on each ward.

30 wards have been formed for 10 cantonment areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Punjab 116 wards have been formed for 21 cantonment boards.

In Sindh 44 wards have been formed for 8 cantonment boards while 9 wards have been established for three cantonment areas in Balochistan.

Elections to the cantonment boards are being held under the Cantonment Local Government (Election) Rules, 2015 framed under the Cantonments Act, 1924.

A total of 2 million registered voters will exercise their right to elect representatives for their respective local governments.
