ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan said Thursday that the judicial commission on election rigging will strengthen democracy, regardless of the outcome of its investigation.

Imran was speaking to reporters shortly before he appeared in front of the judicial commission, which started its ‘open court’ proceedings on Thursday.

“A total of 26 political parties and groups have approached the commission, which means that the PTI was not the only party (complaining of rigging),” said the PTI chairman.

He said that it was an historic day for democracy as it was the first time in Pakistan’s history that investigation was being held at the highest level into electoral rigging.

“This is a bright day for Pakistan's democracy. This would not have happened if not for our protest for 126 days. Everything will be revealed now…people will know how their mandate is stolen,” said Imran.

“Whatever the outcome of the commission’s investigation, democracy will progress and strengthen Pakistan,” he added.

When asked about details of the proofs the party will submit before the commission, Imran said that the PTI will not present one but different kinds of evidence.

“Hafeez Prizada is our opening batsman. He is an experienced lawyer and has fought for democracy. Inshallah he will continue his struggle,” he said.

The three member commission headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Masirul Mulk comprises Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan. Hamid Ali has been appointed as the commission's secretary.

Over 26 political parties including the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Awami National Party (ANP), PTI, PML-Q and others presented evidence to the commission on the last date.
