KARACHI: The Pakistan Rangers Sindh on Monday, arrested three key accused in the Tahir Plaza tragedy of 2009, in which at least six people including two women were burnt alive.

A spokesman for the paramilitary force said the suspects include Muhammad Ali Qureshi alias Darinda, Naeem and Shams.

He said the suspects are accused of setting the building on fire with flammable substances.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies took former chairman of Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (Abad) Babar Chughtai on suspicion of his involvement in targeted killing and land grabbing, drawing strong criticism from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

The MQM Rabita Committee has demanded immediate release of Mr Chughtai and an end to what it called victimisation of its workers and sympathisers.

Chughtai's family said he was arrested during a raid from his residence two days ago.
