The COAS and Mr Zarif discussed regional security including the evolving situation in the Middle East, Pak-Iran border management and defence and security cooperation between the two countries.

According to an ISPR press release, the unity and integrity of Muslim Ummah and greater harmony amongst Muslims was emphasised during the meeting.

The Iranian Foreign Minister appreciated achievements in Operation Zarb-e-Azb and paid rich tributes to Pakistan’s sacrifices in bringing peace and stability in the region.

Upon his arrival at GHQ, the Foreign Minister of Iran was presented Guard of Honour, laid a flora wreath at Yadgar-e-Shuhada and offered Fateha for Pakistan’s martyrs.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Minister met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed Pak-Iran relations along with the ongoing war in Yemen.

On Wednesday, Zarif rejected Saudi Arabia’s claims that his country was backing the Houthi rebels for establishing a pro-Iran state saying “fighting will not resolve this problem”.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Pakistan’s top diplomat on foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz, he said: “We are not bombarding anyone… our planes are not there hitting hospitals and bridges and flour factories.”
