Pakistan sets up cell to assist stranded citizens in Yemen

ISLAMABAD: A Crisis Management Cell has been set up in the Ministry of Foreign Affair for the evacuation of stranded Pakistanis in war-hit Yemen.

According to Foreign Office (FO), the government was making all out efforts to evacuate the Pakistanis from Yemen and they are being taken to safe places.

"The staff of Pakistan embassy in Yemen are also being evacuated," the FO said in a statement.

It is pertinent to note here that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) had also arranged two planes to evacuate Pakistanis from Yemen on the directives of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

In a separate statement, FO spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam had said the safe exit of Pakistanis from Yemen was the top priority of the government, adding "we are also in contact with all neighbouring countries of Yemen for evacuation of Pakistanis without visas by any means".

Speaking to Geo News, Ali Hasan, one of the stranded Pakistanis in Yemen, said the Pakistani expatriates in Yemen were scattered in different groups and trapped in their homes due to ongoing unrest. “We are in contact with the Embassy and are waiting for help from Pakistani authorities,” he added.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said the people living in Yemen were vulnerable to all sorts of crimes including kidnapping as the state system was collapsing.
