KARACHI: At least two policemen were killed and 15 injured Friday morning when a bomb explosion ripped through their bus in Karachi.

Officials said that the bus carrying police commandos had departed from the Razaqabad training centre and had just reached the Malir bridge when terrorists detonated a bomb planted inside a motorcycle parked by the side of the road.

Two policemen were killed and more than 15 injured, who are currently being treated at the Jinnah hospital.

The police commandos belonged to the Special Service Unit, an elite squad that guards VIPs, and were on their way to guard Bilawal House in Clifton, the residence of former president Asif Ali Zardari.

At least four to five kilograms of explosive material was used in the bomb which was detonated through remote control, said DIG East Munir Shaikh.

“There was proper security, with police squads both in front of and behind the bus,” he said.

“The nature of duty for policemen is that they have to travel around, and the route is such that it is difficult to provide security. But we will hopefully catch the perpetrators,” he added.

The blast was so intense that it severely damaged the glass windows and doors of nearby houses.

“The explosion was so powerful, for some time we had no clue what had hit us,” said one resident of the area.

This is not the first time that a bomb attack has targeted a bus filled with police commandos in Karachi.

In a similar attack last year in February, terrorists had targeted a bus leaving the same police training centre in Razaqabad. The attack had left 13 police personnel dead and dozens injured.
