KARACHI: Condemning a suicide attack on Rangers personnel that killed two soldiers, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Friday said that Taliban and banned outfits that are carrying out these attacks should be targeted instead of his party.

In a statement issued from London, he said that Taliban and other proscribed outfits have attacked Rangers and police in the past as well.

“These terrorist elements are not only targeting police and Rangers but also attacking mosques, imambargahs, schools and government installations,” said the MQM chief, who is in deep water for allegedly threatening Rangers officers these days.

He issued controversial statements following a Rangers raid on MQM headquarters Nine-Zero, in which dozens of party activists among wanted suspects were arrested earlier this month.

A former activist of MQM and a death row convict, Saulat Mirza also hurled serious allegations against the party and Hussain in a confession video just hours before his scheduled hanging on March 19 that was later postponed by the president for at least a month.

The MQM chief, in today’s statement, prayed for the early recovery of the injured besides offering condolences with the families of martyred Rangers soldiers.

MQM postpones March 23 rally

In a separate development, the MQM has postponed the “National Unity Rally” scheduled for March 23 due to unavoidable reasons.

A spokesman of the party said that the new date for the rally, which was to be held in Karachi’s Clifton neighbourhood, would be announced once finalised.
