ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Senator Raza Rabbani has resigned from party after being nominated as Chairman Senate.
Sources said Raza Rabbani has resigned from the post of Additional Secretary General of PPP.
Opposition parties in the Senate have decided to field Pakistan People’s Party stalwart Raza Rabbani as candidate for the slot of chairman of the upper house of the Parliament.
The Awami National Party, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Pakistan Muslim League-Q have agreed to support the PPP candidate during a meeting held at the Zardari House on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) ruled out the possibility of horse-trading and political bargaining in Thursday election for the Senate chairman by announcing its support for the opposition’s Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) designated candidate, former federal minister and architect of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a lunch that he hosted for parliamentary group leaders at the PM House.
The announcement has paved the way for the uncontested election of Senator Raza Rabbani to the post.
