NEW DELHI: The Indian Supreme Court on Thursday delivered its detailed verdict regarding the Indian Premier League (IPL) betting scandal, stating that Gurunath Meiyappan, the son in law of Narayanaswami Srinivasan, was found guilty of corruption and betting along with Raj Kundra of Rajasthan Royals.

Srinivasan on the other hand, has been cleared of any involvement or cover-up, however, the Indian Supreme Court has stopped him from contesting the BCCI elections which are to be held in six weeks.

Indian journalist Anurag Bharti likened the Supreme Court verdict barring Srinivasan from contesting BCCI elections to a no entry sign and terming it as a big jolt.

Speaking to Geo News, Indian Journalist Meenakshi Bhanja said that the fact that Srinivasan has been cleared of any involvement, charges against him at best be regarded as suspicion.

The Indian Supreme Court observed that conflict of interest issues remained and Srinivasan had to choose between his IPL team Chennai Super Kings and the top job in BCCI. The court struck down the controversial 6.2.4 clause that allows BCCI officials to own IPL teams and have commercial interests.

The court has appointed a three-member committee, headed by former High Court judge Mukul Mudgal to conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations of corruption against Chennai Super Kings official Meiyappan, India Cements, and Rajasthan Royals' co-owner Kundra, as well as with the larger mandate of allegations around betting and spot-fixing in IPL matches and the involvement of players.
