PPP against military courts bill approval on ZAB birth anniversary

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary party of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Monday expressed its reservations on granting approval to the bill for establishment of military courts on the birth anniversary of the party’s founding leader Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

The meeting of PPP’s parliamentary party chaired by Khursheed Shah and Aitzaz Ahsan decided that the former will demand of the government not to approve the bill today (January 5), as the day marks the birth anniversary of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

During the meeting, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan gave briefing on various aspects in connection with the setting up of army courts while Senator Raza Rabbani, Taj Haider and Nafisa Shah presented arguments against the proposed courts.

PPP leader Shazia Murree said that her party halfheartedly accepted the bill to set up military courts, adding that it was a tough call for every democratic worker to support the courts.

Shazia Marree on the occasion said the PPP is extending its support to the proposed bill with a heavy heart. “Establishment of military courts is a painful move for any democratic worker,” she added.

The meeting said the government will be asked not to conduct motion for the proposed bill.
