Hop on a laari and travel to the epic land of love storiyaan

S

ame stuff, different decade: Ayan Mukherji’s Alia Bhatt/ Ranbir Kapoor/ Amitabh Bachchan starrer, Brahmastra is ready to release and the first song to drop from the film is ‘Kesariya’, sung by Arijit Singh. Those are the facts, and one additional fact is that this film took eight years from planning to release, so like, that’s eight whole seasons of a dramedy about finding romance on a set, while those on the periphery go through legal and social troubles, thanks to them being the flagbearers of nepotism.

Look, if you follow Bollywood even a tiny bit, you’ll get all those references, including this one: what’s new, old, borrowed, and sometimes blue? Most of music composer Pritam’s music. Which segues us to this part of the story:

While people online have been going on and on and on about the love storiyaan lyric of the film being jarring and out of place, the other thing Pakistani fans and/or people with ears picked on was the fact that the pre-chorus sounds a lot like Call’s 2007 track, ‘Laaree Chhootee’.

Xulfi, who now is even better known for producing two of Pakistan’s favorite music shows than he ever was for Call or EP, had sung the song for Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, and the sound for that year and those sandwiching it, was really moody and reflective and rock.

Pritam, who is no stranger to accusations of plagiarism is all, look guys, inspiration tu hai hee shradhanjali ki jaan. He didn’t say that, but that is exactly the kind of cheesy explanation we would like to see, because cheese we understand, Ayan Mukherji’s Astra Universe, not so much. Sounds good though: brown people could use some more superheroes in their midst.
