HBO and Netflix once again lead Emmy nominations

The Emmy nominations are here to deliver the yearly reminder, were it still needed, that streaming services have very emphatically taken over the entertainment world.

While HBO and its streaming companion HBO Max together lead the list, scoring 140 nominations in total, streamers like Netflix (105 noms), Hulu (58), Apple TV+ (52), and Disney+ (34) also have a strong showing this year.

As for the series with the most mentions, comedy dramas are clearly in vogue. At the head of the table is HBO’s Succession, the critically acclaimed black comedy that topped the list with 25 total nods (which include the categories presented at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards), 12 of which are in major categories, followed closely by the beloved Apple TV+ dramedy Ted Lasso (20 total noms), HBO’s satirical anthology The White Lotus (20) and comedy drama Hacks (17), and Hulu’s mystery comedy Only Murders in the Building (17).

The most successful Netflix shows of the year include the survival drama Squid Game (14 total noms), crime drama Ozark (13), and sci-fi horror series Stranger Things (13).

Meanwhile, the omission of shows like Netflix’s neo-Western drama Yellowstone and the FX comedy Reservation Dogs in the major categories were among this year’s snubs. Also missing in the acting honours were the likes of Sean Penn and Julia Roberts (Gaslit), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses), Selena Gomez (Only Murders), and Jessica Chastain (Scenes from a Marriage). The inclusion of Dave Chappelle’s controversial Netflix comedy special The Closer in the Outstanding Variety Special category, on the other hand, has raised eyebrows.

The 2022 Emmys come after a major realignment of the Daytime and Primetime ceremonies brought on by the growth of streaming television. The overhaul reconsiders which shows should fall under which umbrella, changing the scope of the two ceremonies to now revolve around factors such as the themes and style of programmes rather than strictly focusing on dayparts.
