The underdogs of the game

March 13, 2022

As much as we celebrate international cricket or homegrown series featuring men, the same cannot be said for the women’s cricketing side that is left in the shadows. Pakistan’s Women International Cricket team is participating in the ongoing World Cup, which most people may not even know is taking place. It is a reminder of how prolific one gender is and how ignored the other is. Instep picks up endearing moments and players to watch - to increase the viewership – and with it, the investment that goes into women’s cricket.

The underdogs of the game

Bismah Maroof

Captain of the Pakistan team, Bismah Maroof along with the rest of the team lost to India during one particular match but that didn’t stop her from bringing her baby girl to the field. Not only the Pakistani side but the Indian players embraced the child by taking selfies with Bismah and her daughter, creating an endearing environment instead of a brash one.

Rachael Haynes

The underdogs of the game

If India-Pakistan are arch rivals, Australia-England share a similar rivalry with series like Ashes and every match they play considered special. So, it’s no surprise that when Australia and England played during the International Women’s World Cup, cricket enthusiasts were watching. And the player who emerged as the one to watch turned out to be Rachael Haynes. An opening batter, she made what was a match-winning century (130) against England leading her side to victory.

Sophie Devine

The underdogs of the game

We’re not just fans of New Zealand’s Prime Minister, the brilliant Jacinda Ardern, but also New Zealand cricketing side’s captain, Sophie Devine. During this ongoing World Cup, Sophie, who is an all-rounder, proved her mettle for the game. She bowled six overs without giving away too many runs and went onto make a match-winning century for her team.

Shamilia Connell

All the way from the Caribbean Islands, just as solid as her male counterparts, Shamilia Connell from West Indies is a fast bowler who knocked out her opponents and gave them a very uneasy time on the field. She eventually took three wickets and gave away just 38 runs. It turned out to be a match-winning bowling spell against England, who chased but fell short by just seven runs.
