The lowdown on bag trends, straight from the runways.

To have and to hold

It’s time to swap our winter wardrobe as spring/summer season is upon us. Spring is all about fresh shades of greens, blues and pinks, and not to forget, it is a great time to bid adieu to the drab brown, black and grey winter palette. But we totally understand how challenging it can be to accessorize your outfit. And of course, there is no better way to complete your overall look than with the perfect handbag. There is no denying that a statement bag is one of the most sought-after accessories that you can add to your wardrobe.

Handbags are the best example of chic functionality – you carry essential items in it when you’re on the go while making sure they are on-trend and complement your overall look. This spring, handbag trends that we witnessed at the Paris Haute Couture Week are downright experimental and the best part is that there’s something for everyone.

Though there were some impractical bags coming down the runways, surprisingly bag trends were more towards the everyday aesthetic and wearable. From handheld pouches to bucket bags and oversized totes, the options for spring 2022 are endless. Here are some of the hottest handbag trends that you can definitely invest in.

Bucket bags

This season is all about bucket bags. Over the years, there have been various bucket bag adaptations, but this time around designers, such as Tory Burch, Chloe and Michael Kors, went the little extra mile and crafted bags with smooth leathers, glossy finishes and stitching detail. If you’ve always been hesitant about owning a bucket bag, these designs might finally convince you to make the switch. Bucket bags are quite handy and make for great everyday bags; throw in just about anything in them and you know for sure that you will still have space for more.

Shoulder bags

The staple shoulder bag never seems to go out of style and that is exactly what we witnessed at the fashion week. Shoulder bags were a highlight at the Balenciaga, Chanel, Prada and Fendi shows. A nod to the ‘90s, shoulder bags are a fashion favourite that we just can’t get enough of. Fashion is even better when it is all about functionality and there was an influx of shoulder bags in different shapes and sizes just perfect for spring. These bags that are intended to be carried just below the arm don’t just look classy but are also ergonomically sound and easier to carry compared to the oversized, bulkier options.

Handheld handbags

The handheld bag – more commonly known as the clutch bag - is an ideal grab-and-go companion. What is great about handheld handbags is that they are perfect for carrying smaller items to a brunch or even some fun daytime activities. This strap-free bag is now no longer reserved for just evening wear and can also lend an air of sophistication to your everyday outfit. We spotted the handheld bag trend on the runway, where top designers such as Chanel, Brandon Maxwell and Michael Kors showcased some amazing designs.

Textured bags

The only signs of ‘look at me’ exuberance came in the form of textured bags. From crochet to raffia to fringe and everything in between, texture is the hot commodity for spring 2022. Some designers such as Chloe went with vibrant crochet handbags, while Max Mara experimented with raffia to create timeless designs. When it comes to fringes, you can either go all dramatic and opt for extra-long tassels just like designer Rejina Pyo’s creations or keep it subtle with cropped fringes. As for crochet bags, they are a must-have accessory whether you plan to spend a day at the beach or roam about on the city streets.
