The underdogs

January 9, 2022

Picking the best from the rest as Coke Studio promises to descend this month.

The underdogs

Lahooti Live

The heart of the homeland of folk music without claiming to be one overtly, Lahooti Live, spearheaded by Saif Samejo, from The Sketches, captures the true spirit of this music. You will find names as big as Mai Dhai or the grandson of Allan Fakir but you will also find artists you’ve probably never heard before but will fall in love with instantly with their stories and the narratives they present with their music.

True Brew TV

The underdogs

True Brew TV is not releasing music resting as its creator looks into films. Jamal Rahman, the show’s chief architect is focused on films but the value of this show will not diminish. After releasing their debut single, ‘Saqi-E-Bawafa’, Saakin presented two songs on the digital series (with two formats) before they were plucked by Sarmad Khoosat for Zindagi Tamasha OST. Before Abdullah Siddiqui became the prominent artist he is today, he, too, appeared on the series. In fact, some of the most exciting artists have performed on True Brew TV, either before an audience or in a solo atmosphere. You can find everyone from Janoobi Khargosh to Ali Suhail and Sikandar Ka Mandar and our favourite and highly recommended Natasha Noorani.

Lussun TV

The underdogs

Originally created with a different platform, Lussun TV arrived at a time when newer acts didn’t have many platforms to play their music at without compromising. In its four seasons, Lussun TV hosted some of the most eclectic artists of the time, many of whom have evolved further while others have since embraced different mediums. Among personal favourites is 'Brother' by Mole, 'Clipped' by //orangenoise and 'Hum Tum' by Sikandar Ka Mandar. There are plenty of choices such as Basheer and the Pied Pipers, Natasha Humera Ejaz, Khumariyaan and whizkid Usman Riaz (among other talented acts).

Uth Records

The underdogs

It lived for only two seasons with Omran Shafique, Gumby and Zeeshan Parwez helming the first season and the last two producing and directing the second season. Though short-lived and made with a smaller budget compared to Coke Studio, Uth Records produced a number of interesting collaborations and gave space to several artists. Made in a manner that was unlike Coke Studio, the show’s mighty success to this day is the song Yasir & Jawad's Pushto track, 'Reidi Gul', which featured Abdul Wali Orakzai on vocals and was produced by Omran Shafique & Gumby. With poetry by Ghani Khan, the famous Pashtun philosopher, poet and renaissance man of sorts, this song opened the door for Pashtun artists to retain their cultural identity and find a way to fuse with what is considered strong enough to attract attention. Since then, the group has also released ‘Jaam’, ‘Reidi Gul’ still remains biggest hit by Uth Records.
