Hot take of the WEEK! Cringe or a-okay: Shazia Manzoor x Alizeh Shah

Why wouldn’t you have an opinion on Alizeh Shah’s well-documented tumble on a bridal couture ramp? Everyone else does!

Hot take of the WEEK! Cringe or a-okay: Shazia Manzoor x Alizeh Shah

Like, really guys. If you see the fall on a loop, it seems a bit like Shazia Manzoor is really manhandling Alizeh Shah, but then if you sit down and try to watch impartially, it seems like maybe, Shazia Manzoor, maybe, just has the coping mechanism of a jovial, boisterous auntie, whom we assume is always named ‘Baby’, and can’t help but be a little inappropriate.

Why are we beating this dead horse? Because some womxn on the socials are mad at Shazia Manzoor. And honestly, we don’t blame them exactly. We too have had that encounter when someone has hugged us too long, pushed us around literally, pulled our hand or cheek uncomfortably. Just because a woman is doing it doesn’t make it okay. Everyone’s entitled to whatever boundary they want to erect around their personal space, regardless of gender.

To her credit, Alizeh Shah looked completely fine and unrattled even as Shazia Manzoor swung her around, and to Manzoor’s credit, we think she might have been this extra because she was embarrassed on Shah’s behalf.

But maybe what is needed at this time, within the realm of a fashion or beauty related show, is to establish an SOP about stuff like this. So, if someone trips and falls, what should the immediate reaction be? Are you allowed to help them up? Does everyone brush it off and laugh, or exit quietly? There’s been talk time and again about the faux pas that have been made on ramps, ranging from ill-fitting shoes to too much smiling and waving by the model at her friends, to ungroomed finger and toe nails. And yes, occasionally, people will fall. Unlike as recently as three years ago, everything can be recorded, uploaded, and gain traction within minutes if not seconds. Plus the worldview in Pakistan at large – as well as within online communities – has drastically changed. Everything doesn’t need to be scrutinized deeply, but in a production like a fashion show, or awards show, there can be guidelines, do’s and don’ts. This should help towards inappropriate reactions to sudden incidents/accidents and also ensure the safety of every individual’s personal space, even as they collaborate on a public stage.
