Known for his roles in Silicon Valley, The Big Sick (which he co-wrote with his wife, Emily V. Gordon and won multiple awards for), as well as the 2019 comedy Stuber, Kumail Nanjiani is the first Pakistani-American actor to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with Eternals that features him as the superhero Kingo.

Recently, the actor and comedian showed up at the Eternals premiere in Los Angeles sporting a purple and gold sherwani by renowned Pakistani designer, Umar Sayeed. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Eternals actor got a little help from his mother Shabana to help him figure out what to wear for the MCU red carpet debut premiere. Nanjiani wanted to wear a traditional sherwani because it looks awesome and his costume in the movie reminded him of sherwanis. “I wanted to use a designer in Pakistan, not just a Pakistani designer in the U.S. So I called my mum, she gave me names of three amazing designers in Pakistan,” reported The Hollywood Reporter.

The next step was to connect with Pakistani designer Umar Sayeed via Instagram, which was done by Nanjiani’s stylist, Jeanne Yang, who sent pictures of the actor’s on-screen costume to the couturier. Kumail Nanjiani told the magazine, “I wanted the colours to be similar to my costume colours and purple and gold are a beautiful combination. The paisley pattern is very traditional as well.”

We love that Kumail chose to wear a local designer and while we do feel a classic black would have been more sophisticated, a black sherwani would perhaps have been more Matrix and less Eternals and we understand Kumail’s thought behind the traditional purple and gold paisleys.
