May 30, 2021

Ellen DeGeneres announced the end of her talk show; Italy won Eurovision; Ariana Grande got married; and more news from the month of May.

Film

The Knives Out sequel added Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., and Kate Hudson to the cast. No word yet on whether Chris Evans’ sweater will reprise its role.

The Enola Holmes sequel is officially in the works as Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavil continue their world domination.

Get ready to pass the pineapple again! Psych 3: This Is Gus has officially been confirmed. Production begins in the summer.

There’s some progress on a Willy Wonka prequel movie. It was reported that Timothee Chalamet will play a younger version of Roald Dahl’s famous chocolatier.

R.I.P. Golden Globes? Amidst growing controversy about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s behind-the-scenes working, Tom Cruise returned his trophies and NBC announced it won’t air the show in 2022. Cornered, the HFPA reaffirmed its commitment to change and released a new timeline for reforms.

After having been closed since last year amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Cineworld resumed operations in the UK, giving us hope that eventually we too will go back to eating overpriced popcorn!

Television

The announcement of a Friends cast reunion had us excited. Then it was revealed that James Corden would be hosting the event. Excitement levels promptly plummeted.

A Green Lantern television series is coming to HBO Max. Can we get a promise in writing that it won’t look to the Ryan Reynolds’ film for inspiration?

Lily James and Sebastian Stan are playing Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee in a biopic about their marriage and infamous sex tape. Because apparently that’s something the world needs.

Netflix cancelled The Irregulars, The Last Kingdom, and The Duchess.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed it’s possible to actually have a black lead in a show and not be tokenistic about it.

Jesse Williams left Grey’s Anatomy after 12 years, which would have been sad news for us had we actually watched Grey’s Anatomy at any point in the last 12 years.

With her public image busy nose-diving, Ellen DeGeneres announced that her talk show was coming to an end. Let’s pretend it’s because she has lost her passion for the format and not because nobody likes her anymore.

Music

Chris Martin said he wants to use emojis for new Coldplay song titles, to which we say:

Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s, Jay-Z, Carole King, Todd Rundgren, and Tina Turner were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Why it took so long to honour some of these artists is beyond us.

The Weeknd was the big winner at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, going home with a bucket-load of trophies; he triumphed in 10 of the 16 categories in which he was nominated.

Italy won Eurovision – the country’s third victory in the contest – with the Måneskin rock song ‘Zitti e buoni’, which apparently translates to ‘Shut Up and Be Quiet’. Yes, a song called ‘Shut Up and Be Quiet’ won Eurovision. The irony is not lost on us.

Stars

Melinda Gates filed for divorce from Bill Gates. So we’re guessing the microbots don’t work then?

Bennifer might be a thing again, which is fine as long as they don’t make another Gigli.

Ben Affleck and Matthew Perry gave young women several reasons not to be on Raya.

Elon Musk revealed he has Asperger’s. Suddenly everything started to make a lot more sense.

Eventful month for former Disney/Nickelodeon stars: Ariana Grande got married to Dalton Gomez. Demi Lovato changed her pronouns to “they/them”. Nick Jonas cracked a rib in a bike accident.

Billie Eilish sent the Internet into a tailspin by wearing a corset.

Gal Gadot, Rihanna, Malala Yousafzai, and Greta Thunberg drew ire for their variously inappropriate statements about the Israeli attacks on Palestinians.

Chrissy Teigen was cancelled after the revelation that she bullied a teenage Courtney Stodden and encouraged them to kill themself.

Actress Kat Dennings got engaged to party-starter Andrew W. K. … which somehow simultaneously makes absolutely no sense and all the sense in the world. Congrats to the happy couple!
