Jimmy Khan releases Tich Button EP

May 9, 2021

Singer and songwriter, Jimmy Khan is officially back

Singer and songwriter, Jimmy Khan is officially back. After releasing ‘Nikka Mota Bajra’, ‘Tich Butona Di Jori’ and ‘Pyar Naal Na Sahi’, Jimmy Khan took a detour; having featured in projects such as the all-star Parey Hut Love Jimmy Khan went somewhat silent but has returned to his musical roots this year by dropping the full Tich Button EP.

Off the three tracks mentioned above, while two are covers, ‘Tich Butona Di Jori’ is an original song.

The Jimmy Khan Band has now dropped two more songs, ‘Chan Kithan’ and ‘Kir Kir’. Backed by a terrific live band with the likes of Zain Ahsan and several other music players, the landscape is in tune with the rest of the album. As for the songs, though they are covers, it’s Jimmy Khan’s spin that makes them unique.

In both videos, like their predecessors, Jimmy and the band are sporting all white, making the music stand-out visually.

Speaking to Instep about Tich Button in an earlier interview, Jimmy had said about the look: “We live in a visual world and audio is not consumed as much as video. The costumes didn’t change but we gave variation to each video by changing the colour palette of the background and shooting style. You’ll see that every song is identified with a colour through which we got the white of the clothes to pop.”

He further stated on the topic of Tich Button, “I wanted the band to be showcased because we are obsessed with the idea of the singer but a band is integral to the sound. In the music video you see how it’s entirely teamwork and the voices have not been modified, which can end up sounding robotic at times, to preserve the essence of what music really sounds like.”

And no, the EP has nothing to do with an upcoming all-star film, also named Tich Button.

Jimmy has achieved his goals and Tich Button - the full live EP - is out with wonderful iconic songs including one original. It is available on Spotify and other major music platforms. Stream it now!

SomeWhatSuper drop new music

Having released a slew of prolific songs including ‘Bandook’, ‘The Sibbi Song’ ft. Abid Brohi and ‘Sher-e-Balochistan’ ft. Sami Amiri, SomeWhatSuper seem to be busy making music, irrespective of the ongoing pandemic.

One half of the electronic music duo, Feroz Faisal first released a song called ‘Nach Ni Jinde’ featuring Shoaib Ali & Hassan Ali and it’s an incredible effort. Apart from the vocals, this is not the typical kind of electronic dance track that we’ve come to expect from SomeWhatSuper. If anything, it is a subversion of expectations that both Feroz and Talha can create electronic music that looks beyond EDM.

Released under the banner of SomeWhatSuper, the song isn’t the only Feroz Faisal release from the duo this year. After ‘Nach Ni Jinde’ came another equally stunning track called ‘Yadan’. Produced by Feroz Faisal, ‘Yadan’ features Shafqat Qawwal on vocals with the composition jointly composed by Shafqat and Feroz.

The result is a ferocious track that takes the vocals, emitting a qawwali-feeling, and turns them upside down; the music feels like an ode to Southasian sounds. And though it begins in such fashion, the electronic synth provides layer after layer of sound you don’t expect.

SomeWhatSuper have built a reputation of being a prominent electronic dance music duo from Lahore. But these tracks suggest that there are other flavours within electronic that SWS can experiment with in just as colourful fashion.

Pakistan Super League anthem,
‘Groove Mera’ crosses 15 million views

Pakistan Super League’s sixth edition has been moved to June 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But the announcement of a new season, as always, came with a song. Xulfiqar Jabbar Khan produced what is quite possibly the most diverse collaboration in ‘Groove Mera’. In previous editions, songs have been released but not with this kind of musical diversity.

Aima Baig, a superstar in her own right, was presented in never-before-seen fashion while the emerging stars of tomorrow, Young Stunners, brought their A-game. The song-stealing moments belonged to Naseebo Lal.

But when the song first released, it was met with classist and sexist views. However, whether you loved it or hated, people tuned into YouTube to watch the song. As a result, the much controversial song has crossed 15 million views. Though statistics are not always the barometer for talent, in this case, it shows that ultimately this song is a success.

Given the treatment meted out to Naseebo Lal in particular (in terms of hateful tweets), this giant leap of numbers is a win for diversity and collaboration.

While you’re in the zone, check out Naseebo Lal’s collaborative track called ‘Aag’ with Talal Qureshi (also ft. Shamoon Ismail) to see just how electrifying she can be.
