Recreating runways at the BAFTAs 2021

April 18, 2021

A hybrid red carpet served striking looks on the biggest night of the British film calendar.

The 74th edition of British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs), just like other award ceremonies, was a hybrid and socially-distanced event. While many stars made their way to the Royal Albert Hall in London, others tuned in from around the globe. Last year the BAFTAs introduced a sustainable dress code, but this year was a little different. The biggest names in film and television didn’t let the pandemic stop them from making bold, show-stopping statements and were seen flaunting a mix of custom-made looks and straight-off-the-runway styles. There was plenty of fashion to take in from the night and here are some of our favourite hair and makeup looks...

Priyanka Chopra Jonas

For the BAFTAs 2021, the actress wore a red floral jacquard, open-bust jacket, and white harem trousers from Spanish designer Pertegaz’s autumn/winter 2021 collection. She paired the look with black Louboutin pointed-toe heels and turquoise tassel necklace by Bulgari. Celebrity makeup artist Wendy Rowe matched Priyanka’s lip colour with the gorgeous scarlet-red shade of her jacket and opted for soft gold smokey eyes. Celebrity hairstylist Luke Pluck Rose went with one of 2021’s biggest trends and styled Priyanka’s hair in a bubble braid and softened the look by adding slight waves to her fringe.

Ashley Madekwe

Ashley Madekwe, who was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in UK indie drama County Lines, celebrated her special night wearing a bright yellow Louis Vuitton gown with a cut-out detail at the waist. For the night, makeup artist Jo Baker wanted a strong look, drawing attention to her eyes. Baker created a modern cat eye by applying black eyeshadow first and then packing gel eyeliner on top of the shadow to add extreme depth and inky black finish. A soft powdery pink blush and matching plush nude pink lip colour were used to finish the look. As for her hair, hairstylist Larry Sims went with a slick braided ponytail that went all the way down to her waist.

Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger, who tuned in live from LA, went for an edgy metallic dress. Styled by celebrity stylist Petra Flannery, Renee looked stunning in a sculpted Armani Prive pewter coloured dress, featuring a structural pointed neckline. She went for a minimalist look and accessorized the bespoke creation with a gorgeous pair of subtle nude Louboutins and a black and gold enamel wrist cuff by David Webb. The Judy actress’ makeup was minimal and natural with nude lips, while her dark blonde tresses were styled in effortless waves to complete the look.

Kosar Ali

Nominated for the best supporting actress for her moving performance in Rocks, Kosar Ali chose to wear an all-white ensemble from Alexander McQueen’s spring/summer 2021 collection. Kosar looked beautiful in a sharp cropped ivory blazer and a romantic dress with tumbling layers of tulle. The British actress accessorized her look with antique butterfly rings, metal ear cuffs dotted with crystals and baroque river pearl droplets, and embellished brooches. Her makeup was kept minimal with winged eyeliner and brown lips.

Andra Day

Styled by Wouri Vice, Andra Day wowed in a lavish bright green Elie Saab backless dress at the BAFTAs 2021. The halter neck maxi dress was fitted at the hips, however the main statement was definitely the chain trimming. Andra went all out and accentuated her eyes with bronze metallic eye shadow, thick fluttery lashes and made her pout pop with a swipe of glossy nude lipstick. Wearing her hair in a gorgeous half-up, half-down style, Andra kept her accessories minimal and went with statement gold hoops and rings.
