Trend alert: Must-have bags

November 15, 2020

If you’re looking to make a serious bag investment, here are a few bag trends that are ruling this winter.

With the onset of winter, it’s time to swap our summer wardrobe and sandals in exchange for long sleeves and sweaters. And while many of us fall prey to a boring brown and black winter palette, which is an unfortunate staple, we would advise you to add some oomph to your wardrobe, albeit with accessories. The statement bag, you’ll be pleased to know, is one of the most sought-after accessories to add to your fashion wardrobe.

When it comes to accessories, handbags are the best example of chic functionality. Of course you carry your essential goods in it when you’re on the go, but you’re also making sure they look trendy and complement your overall look. This winter, handbag trends are downright experimental and are in fact quite a ‘mixed bag’. From hard-shell, structured shapes to bucket bags, there’s something for everyone.

Here are some of the hottest handbag trends that are all the rage this season.

Bucket bags

This season is all about bucket bags. Did you know that the bucket bag or the Noé, an elongated shape with a drawstring and a sturdy handle, was invented in 1932 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton? Since then, buckets have become a handbag staple and this winter is no different. The best part is that bucket bags are quite handy. They make for great everyday bags; throw in just about anything in them and you know for sure that you have ample space for more. We spotted the bucket bag trend at various fashion weeks, where top designers such as Gucci, Balmain and Chloé showed off some amazing designs.

Tasselled/fringed bags

The only signs of ‘look at me’ exuberance came in the form of fringe/tasselled bags, as the trend dominated the international fashion runways. Fringed bags were a highlight at Bottega Veneta, Miuccia Prada and Dior. While a fringe can sometimes be too OTT on clothes, it works wonders on jazzing up bags. You can either go all dramatic and opt for extra long tassels or keep it subtle with cropped fringes.

Chunky chains

Chain detailing featured prominently on accessories this season and it was a similar story with bags. Be it Chanel, Stella McCartney or Balenciaga, various designers lent smart handbags an edge, thanks to oversized gold chain detailing. The chain-link handle is a non-mover on the trends leader board, so whatever style bag you prefer, make sure your bag strap makes a statement—the chunkier the chain, the better! Remember, your chain detail doesn’t need to be gold or silver, just chunky and eye-catching.

Geometric shapes

Triangles, hexagons, circles…this winter is all about fun shapes. Geometric shapes have been gaining popularity for quite some time now. Various brands have been designing bags that are striking for their angular qualities, but this season’s sharp-cornered bags took the limelight on the runways. Some designers such as Dior went with a distinctly vintage vibe, while Marc Jacobs lent a retro ’50s mood to his creations. What’s great is that you can go for a geometric-shaped bag whether you are going for a formal night out or a casual one.

Charm school

A lot of bag charms were spotted this season. One of the most fun trends, bag charms will give your classic bag a touch of joyful practicality. Fendi showcased bags adorned with brass cigarette lighters and Apple watches, iPhone pens and Ear Pod holders. Moreover, Chloé bags had water-bottle holders hanging off of them, while other designers went with tiny purses attached to the bags. These charms can be attached to a belt loop or hung from a long chain. We’re sure you have one for your hand sanitiser already!
