What’s in store on TV this season

Upcoming drama serials that promise strong storylines and ensemble casts.

After the first quarter of 2020, one could see a dearth of fresh content on local television owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent suspension of all activity. However, as shoots began to resume, multiple new dramas including Mohabbat Tujhe Alvida, Jalan and Log Kiya Kahenge went on air, encouraging others to resume filming too. And as we enter the second half of 2020, an entire list of drama serials is expected to hit our TV screens shortly.

Here are five highly anticipated dramas that we are looking forward to…

Mushk

Urwa Hocane and Imran Ashraf starrer Mushk has been in the works for sometime and initial teasers have finally arrived. Penned by Imran Ashraf and directed by Aehsun Talish of Suno Chanda and Yeh Dil Mera fame, the upcoming drama has an ensemble cast that includes Osama Tahir, Momal Sheikh, Hasan Ahmed and Zara Tareen among others. Going by the first two teasers that released earlier this week, Mushk has a unique story to tell, as opposed to a conventional love story, with characters that are multidimensional. Urwa is making a comeback of sorts while she will be sharing screen space with Imran Ashraf for the first time. The dialogue delivery and execution looks promising and we are eager to watch it once it goes on air tomorrow.

Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3

Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3

Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 is another exciting project to look forward to, given that the first two installments were a huge hit. Starring Feroze Khan, Iqra Aziz, Junaid Khan and Tooba Siddiqui in pivotal roles, the upcoming third part is written by Hashim Nadeem Khan and directed by Syed Wajahat Hussain. It has been long since the drama was announced but we assume the shoot got delayed due to the pandemic and it’s taking a while to film and finish. According to reports, filming is underway these days. Going by the title and previous installments, the narrative revolves around the love of God that goes far beyond the love for another human. Produced by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi under the banner of 7th Sky Entertainment, Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 also features Jawed Sheikh, Sunita Marshall, Rubina Ashraf, Asma Abbas, Usman Peerzada, Seemi Pasha, Zain Baig and Sohail Sameer.

Saraab

Bringing Sonya Hussyn and Sami Khan together once again after Ishq Zah e Naseeb and Aesi Hai Tanhai, upcoming drama Saraab has a social theme at heart. Teasers featuring Sonya and Sami have started unveiling the story, hinting at a love sequence between the two; needless to say, there seems to be a twist to the tale. Earlier this year, Sonya revealed that she will be playing a schizophrenic in an upcoming project that features Sami and we finally know the title of the drama. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder which destabilizes a person’s connection with reality while its symptoms range from delusions, hallucinations, mood fluctuations and other cognitive disruptions. In a recent social media post, Sonya stated that her character is not “ashamed of being on medication or talking to a therapist,” and that’s what we think should provide a refreshing angle to the narrative if handled well. Let’s wait and see how director Mohsin Talat and writer Edison Idrees tackle the subject.

Prem Gali

Prem Gali

Qasim Ali Mureed directorial Prem Gali, with Farhan Saeed and Sohai Ali Abro headlining the project, has an interesting story to offer. “Prem Gali is an extension of Aangan (Qavi Khan-starrer); it is very family-oriented and has an extended cast,” the director informed Instep in an earlier interview. Revolving around themes of love and relationships, the drama has a realistic arc and is based on 30 episodes. Penned by ace writer Faiza Iftikhar, it features Shamim Hilaly, Uzma Hassan and Qavi Khan among many others. Initially scheduled to launch after Eid ul Fitr, its release was delayed but it is expected to air tomorrow.

Dunk

Dunk

Featuring Sana Javed and Bilal Khan as Amal and Haider, Dunk is being directed by Badar Mehmood of Cheekh fame while it is being produced by Fahad Mustafa who was the first one to share the news earlier this year. While we do not know much about the plot and characters yet, the project looks promising given the names associated with it that also include Noman Ijaz. Bilal and Sana have come very far with their versatile performances and one hopes the upcoming drama will live up to the expectations the two have set among fans. The play is currently being shot and is expected to air later this year.
