Romancing the rains

This year, so far, the monsoon has been kind to Lahore

If TS Eliot had lived in our part of the world, could he have regarded July as the “cruellest month”? For all practical purposes, the showers that this month brings with it aren’t known to be kind to humanity. Torrents have been synonymous with flash floods and so much devastation. But so far, this monsoon has been mild, and just the kind that would stir the romantic in you. After all, we all love a bit of rain, the petrichor that instantly follows, especially after a hot, humid day — that’s when we took off our shoes and danced feverishly as kids, didn’t we? And as adults we curl up on our couches and read, occasionally stealing a glance at the rain dance through the windowpanes, and have a listen to its patter, while everything around us feels so different. And each sip from our cuppa tea tastes so much better.
