It’s been a busy week in Pakistan. From the opening ceremony and start of the fifth edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020, to recognizing iconic women from Pakistan and beyond; we’ve also seen Mahira Khan involved in her UNHCR activities in Islamabad and we’ve seen polo players take to the stylish sport in Lahore. This past week saw a number of exciting events happening around the country; here’s a lowdown...
To honour and celebrate iconic women from across Pakistan and abroad for their contributions in various fields, the HUM Women Leaders Award was held at the Governor House in Karachi. While the President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, along with the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Paul W Jones graced the occasion with their presence, many celebrities such as Mahira Khan, Hadiqa Kiyani, Sajjad Ali and many others were spotted at the event. Some of the winners included Pakistan’s first female mountaineer Samina Baig, Bushra Ansari, Pakistan’s former Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi and Dr Shamshad Akhtar, the first woman in Pakistan’s history to serve as Governor State Bank among many others.
The opening ceremony of Pakistan Super League 2020 – the first edition to entirely happen in the country – took place at Karachi’s National Stadium. Stars from the world of cricket and showbiz - Mehwish Hayat, Maya Ali, Adnan Siddiqui and many more - were in attendance. While the show began with the national anthem, later a group of drummers and trumpeters performed an instrumental version of the official PSL 2020
anthem ‘Tayyar Hain’, dressed in national colours. Some of the performances included a Sufi medley featuring singer Sanam Marvi, qawwals Fareed Ayaz and Abu Mohammad and Soch band. Moreover Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sajjad Ali, Ali Azmat, Arif Lohar, Haroon Rashid, Asim Azhar, Aima Baig and Abrarul Haq also performed at the opening.
This past week UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador in Pakistan, actress Mahira Khan attended the Refugee Summit Islamabad, marking 40 years of Pakistan hosting Afghan refugees. The Superstar actress, who met the UN General-Secretary, Antonio Guterres at the same event and addressed other attendees as well, has been working with the UN Refugee Agency for a few years now. The event held at the historic Lahore Polo Club is one of the most prestigious polo tournaments in the high goal South Asian Polo calendar. Some of the world’s best polo players joined Pakistan’s finest including Juan Maria Ruiz, Saqib Khan Khakwani, George Meyrick, Raja Temur Nadeem, Eulogio Celestino, Juan Cruz Losada, Hamza Mawaz Khan and Nicolas A Recaite.
