New season, new rules??? Maybe and then again maybe not. Players gaining to acquire more matches get to practice making lots of tournaments back-to-back. They get exhausted and slip on their chances of doing well and going deep in events.

Roger Federer knows that he must watch his choices depending on dates, court surfaces, and tournament priorities. “I need to train hard and get ready for Tokyo,” commented Federer whose mind is basically on gaining something he hasn’t acquired since eight years ago — a medal at the Olympics.

The start of another season can create different ideas for a player in Federer’s caliber. But when you’re the oldest ones in the top ten, getting your chances and taking them is essential. Despite all of the events on the tour, Federer has his eye on the Olympics and says that “..I will enter the draw with the gold medal on my mind, that’s why I’m traveling to Japan.I want to grasp the opportunity.”

He is standing among a lot of younger players: NextGen ones and many players eager to have that same dream in their heads. Roger knows that as the years go by, his chances of winning over any player gets less and less.

He will pick and choose, deliberate, and select which event will be to his benefit whether it be on hard or clay courts, composite or grass. The upcoming ATP Cup is here and locations in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney are fine tuners for the first grand slam of the season — The Australian Open.

But Federer can no longer guarantee success in playing back-to-back tournaments as years gone past. He knows sitting out the ATP Cup founded this year, has just started this year will be his best bet if he wants to feel he has the upper hand on the Australian Open and does well there.

He’s had victory titles in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2017 with the last one in 2018. He wants to continue his trek but knows that time is getting short to capture it again and again. Federer has to pick and choose carefully being aware of which event is better to participate in than others.

The ATP Cup tournament director Tom Larner has said that “Roger made the decision to spend some time with his family and he is ...conscious of how much he’s playing.” It may not only be the point of enjoying family life as there is of not to wear his body out on less necessary events.

The idea of facing high ranking players is one thing, but also to compete against the players who are at least 10 years younger than him is intimidating on all levels.

Every season for Roger Federer is an important one where some events have to be slashed in the sake of others.

All Roger Federer may want to accomplish now is to choose right and stay healthy to gain more success at matches by playing well and not a majority of them.
