BEAUTY STATION! Tony Awards 2019: Stand-out fashion moments

Instep Desk

The 73rd annual Tony Awards 2019, held recently at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, was a star-studded affair where A-list celebs, top Broadway stars, playwrights and directors gathered to celebrate the best of theatre.

While the Tony Awards honor Broadway’s best and brightest - from the starring roles and the stunning choreography to the dramatic set(s) and sound design - it was the style quotient that caught everyone’s fancy.

Celebrities brought drama to the awards night wearing elegant, floor-length gowns, plenty of ruffles and endless amounts of glitter and jewel tones, outshining the jaw-dropping backdrop of some 40,000 multi-colored roses. As far as hair and makeup was concerned, the stars dazzled in theatrical looks including dramatic smokey eye makeup, lilac eyes, bright red lips and much more.

Here are five of our favourite looks of the night…

Regina King

Actress and director Regina King, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk, wowed in a pink halter-style Prada gown with dramatic ruching and a side train. She accessorised her look with dazzling diamond drop earrings from Jacob & Co. jewelry and kept her makeup glam with brown smokey eye makeup and finished her look with bright pink lips that coordinated well with her gorgeous gown.

Lucy Liu

For the event, actress-director Lucy Liu chose a tulle gown by Christian Siriano. Instead of pairing her dress with diamonds, Liu went with jade green earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, which perfectly complemented the bright purple hue of her gown. For a dramatic effect, she opted for black mascara for her upper lashes and kept the rest of her look minimal with soft pink blush and nude lips. As for Liu’s hairdo, it was styled into a half up-do with centre parting leaving the rest of hair loose.

Rachel Brosnahan

Best known for portraying the eponymous NYC housewife-turned-stand-up-comedian in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, actress Rachel Brosnahan shimmered in a pale blue Christian Dior gown with ruffles, intricate detailing and metallic embellishments. She accessorised her outfit with Selim Mouzannar jewelry. While Brosnahan opted for a shimmery lilac eye makeup, she finished her look with purple liner on her lower lashes, blushed cheeks and rosy pink lips. She went with sleek, centre parting hairstyle and secured it with sparkly hair pins. This was definitely one of the best beauty looks of the night.

Emily Ratajkowski

Model and actress Emily Ratajkowski looked stunning in a black Michael Kors dress. Trading in her signature long, wispy brown locks, Ratajkowski unveiled her new summer hairstyle: an above-the-shoulder bob that was swept to one side. While her full-volume blowout had a retro feel, Ratajkowski’s makeup was glamorous yet chic. Her smokey cat eyes and neutral pink lips gave off a modern yet dramatic feel.

Marisa Tomei

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) recognize Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, guardian of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming. At the awards night, the Academy Award-winning actress chose a gorgeous Ralph & Russo floral gown, which was embellished with crystals, glass beads and silk thread-work. To complete her red carpet look, Tomei added Lorraine Schwartz diamond and ruby earrings and went with bright red lips keeping the rest of her makeup fresh and subtle.
