Five shows to watch this fall

The Rookie

*ing: Nathan Fillion, Afton Williamson, Eric Winter, Melissa O’Neil, Richard T Jones and Mercedes Mason

Actor Nathan Fillion played one of the most memorable roles on network television in and as Castle for eight seasons. With charm and wit, he embodied the role of author-turned-crime fighter with NYPD, Richard Castle, in a way one can’t imagine others doing. After the show ended in 2016, everyone waited to see what he would do next.

Now he’s returning to network television in The Rookie, a crime drama about John Nolan, a forty-year old man, who becomes the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department. The promo looks intriguing and with a good ensemble cast, the show looks like a good second start for Fillion.

The series also stars Afton Williamson, Eric Winter, Melissa O’Neil, Richard T Jones and Mercedes Mason. The show is created and executive produced by Alexi Hawley, who was also an executive producer on Castle. The series premieres this October.

Release: October 2018

New Amsterdam

*ing: Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montogomery, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine and Anupam Kher

Ryan Eggold has played several supporting roles in many television series, over the years. His most notable one came via The Blacklist as Tom Keen.

On The Blacklist, his convoluted character, looking for redemption, became so well-liked that the executive producers tried to give him his own spin-off of Blacklist titled Blacklist: Redemption. Sadly, nowhere close to the genius of James Spader or the original series, it came and went without any fuss. His character was then killed off in The Blacklist, but he’s become a fan-favorite during this run.

Now Ryan Eggold is coming back to television in his own show as the lead. The series is called New Amsterdam and is about Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) as he becomes the medical director of one of the oldest public hospitals in United States. His aim is to reform the neglected facility to provide exceptional care to patients. Also starring in the series is Freema Agyeman, Janet Montogomery, Jocko Sims, and Tyler Labine. Another casting coup for the series is that it stars none other than Anupam Kher in a series regular role. The show premieres this September and we have to wait and see how it turns out to be.

FBI

*ing: Melissa Peregrym, Jeremy Sisto, Zeeko Zaki and Sela Ward

One of the biggest producers in network television is Dick Wolf, the creator of Law and Order: SVU, Chicago Fire, Chicago PD and many more. This newest drama from Wolf productions is something called FBI and it stars Melissa Peregrym in the lead role.

From Rookie Blue fame, which ran from 2010-2015, this is her role from beginning to end. Dick Wolf does procedural shows better than anyone and this new show has all the markings of one. With an exciting ensemble cast, the show comes as an eye-opening procedural about the inner workings of the New York office of the FBI, bringing to bear all the bureau’s skills, intellect and technology to keep New York and the US safe. The overall story may not sound new but the trailer looks appealing and with the current environment of terrorism and hate driving the conversation at home and abroad, this show just might be more relevant than you may think. It also stars Jeremy Sisto, Zeeko Zaki, and Sela Ward.

Release: TBA (To be announced)

The Fix

*ing: Robin Tunney, Adam Rayner, Merrin Dungey, Breckin Meyer, Marc Blucas, Mouzam Makkar, Alex Saxon, and Scott Cohen

Robin Tunney is returning to television after The Mentalist ended in 2015 in the lead role in The Fix. Co-written and executive produced by O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, the series is about Maya Travis (Robin Tunney), a Los Angeles DA who suffers a devastating defeat when prosecuting A-list actor Sevvy Johnson (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje) for double murder.

With her high-profile career derailed, she flees for a quieter life in Washington. Eight years later, when Sevvy Johnson is under suspicion for another murder, Maya is lured back to the DA’s office for another chance at justice.

Marcia Clark was also one of the executive producers of American Crime Story: People versus O.J. Simpson and it was, without question, one of the best drama series to emerge from television, with both fans and critics united on the verdict. If any ounce of the same nuanced story-telling device is used in The Fix, rest assured we will have a series worth watching.

Whiskey Cavalier

*ing: Scott Foley, Lauren Cohan Ana Ortiz, Tyler James Williams and Josh Hopkins

Scott Foley – who essayed Jake Ballard in Shonda Rhimes’s Washington-based series Scandal – is returning to television with this new fun-filled spy drama called Whiskey Cavalier. The series follows the adventure of FBI agent Will Chase (codename: Whiskey Cavalier), who following an emotional break-up, is assigned to work with CIA operative Francesca "Frankie" Trowbridge (codename: Fiery Tribune). Together, they lead an inter-agency team of spies who periodically save the world (and each other), while navigating the rocky roads of friendship, romance and office politics. Starring opposite Foley is Lauren Cohan from The Walking Dead fame. The chemistry between the two is great as shown in the trailer and this one looks like a fun new show. The series also stars Ana Ortiz, Tyler James Williams and Josh Hopkins.
