Recently, during the ODI series against New Zealand, Virat Kohli achieved another milestone when he became the fastest to reach 9000 ODI runs – he did it in just 194 innings. He has broken South African skipper AB de Villiers’ record who took 205 innings to achieve the feat.

Last year, Kohli had completed 8000 ODI runs in just 175 innings, breaking AB de Villiers’ record, who took 182 innings.

The 29-year-old Indian skipper is the sixth Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Mohammad Azharuddin and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to reach the milestone.

After the retirement of Sachin Tendulkar, it was assumed that the replacement of little master would take a long time. But Virat Kohli has filled in the space very efficiently. Kohli overtook Australia’s Ricky Ponting’s record of most centuries (30) in ODIs, as he got to his 31st ton against New Zealand in the first ODI in Mumbai.

Virat has scored 49 International centuries and surpassed former Indian captain Rahul Dravid’s 48 hundreds.

Since Kohli’s debut, India have won eight ODIs while chasing 300-plus targets. Before Kohli’s first appearance, India had chased down targets of 300 or more only seven times.

During the 2013 series against Australia, he slammed a 52-ball 100 to help chase down 360 in Jaipur. In the same series, in Nagpur, Kohli slammed 115 to help India chase down 351.

Before the current year, Kohli’s best year was 2011 when he scored 1381 runs in 34 ODIs. He followed up with 1026 in 2012, 1268 in 2013, 1054 in 2014, 623 in 2015 and 739 in 2016.

But in 2017, he has already scored 1460 in 26 matches, averaging 76.84 and at a strike rate of 99.11.

Kohli’s overall ODI average is 55.74 in 202 appearances, but while chasing his average goes up to 65.29 and rises to 93.40 in successful chases.

Over the last year or so, India have won five Test series under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. He hasn’t lost a series as a full-time Test captain. He has five wins from 10 matches. In his last six Tests as captain, India have won five. If Kohli plays for 10 years further, he may surpass many more international records.
