Oye! Sibti

Mohammad Sibtain Fazli, better known as Sibti, is one of music’s most mischievous and inventive artists. Previously associated with the music outfit called Ramlal, Sibti has been flying solo in music for a while and has created songs that are instinctive, playful and obscure, all at the same time. After hits singles like ‘Badnaam’ (with Spoonful), ‘Aanay De’ and

‘Peshawar Ka Larki’, the singer-songwriter staged a brilliant return last year with the album, Book of Sibt that contains a total of eight songs. Nominated in the category of Song of the Year and Album of the Year for his incredible efforts in the upcoming edition of

Lux Style Awards, here is Sibti unplugged…

His vitals

Age: 33

Hometown: Lahore

Big break: Yet to come

Crazy fact #1: My most ‘hit’ song to date

(‘Peshawar Ka Larki’) has lyrics that are gibberish and not actual words.

Crazy fact #2: I do invent my own words sometimes to fit as lyrics in my songs.

What is your current state of mind?

Panic!

Who are your

heroes in real life?

Anyone with good character and humility- who hasn’t ‘sold their soul to the devil’.

Thoughts on indie

music in Pakistan:

There’s tons of it now. I personally like Poor Rich Boy, who are sort of like the undisputed kings of indie music in

Pakistan. I think Zain Ahsan is really talented. He’s like a mad-genius-scientist in the studio. And I like Shorbanoor. Shehzad Noor Butt is my favorite singer-songwriter, and

performer. I absolutely admire the guy and his talents.

The most embarrassing thing in your closet:

Three broken pieces of my most beautiful and favorite guitar, that I smashed. *heartache*

Meanest thing you’ve heard about yourself?

"Sibti! a man who raped his way into stardom". Hahaha!

What is your greatest fear?

That there might not be an afterlife.

Which living person do you most despise?

Mekaal Hasan. But he’ll probably be dead soon.

I’m not wishing him dead… he’s just that old.
