Hamza Ali Abbasi is much more than a pretty face. The problem is, we all too often wish he wasn’t. Now known as the actor riding a very high moral horse into the horizon of righteousness, there are more controversial comments than films or TV serials to his name. In fact, just to be clear, he has only two films of any consequence to his name: Mein Hoon Shahid Afridi and Waar. That was back in 2013 and now it wouldn’t be wrong to say that HAB is a celebrity because of his Facebook posts rather than his work. We have to say (with trepidation) that his Facebook posts certainly are getting more attention than the small roles he landed in the films!
The latest incident to have stirred his personal moral brigade out of hibernation is the Supreme Court Judgement legalizing gay marriage in America. We can respect and tolerate all forms of peacefully conveyed opinions (even HAB’s) but what we can’t accept is a celebrity whose only claim to fame is his foot. Which is perpetually in his mouth.
"Stop trying to justify homosexuality under the banner of universal love," HAB wrote in one of his Facebook rants. "What’s next? Legalising and celebrating incest?" Can someone please explain the difference to the man, who clearly reads sexual exploitation and a consensual relationship between two adults as the same thing?
Don’t get us wrong. We feel that Hamza Ali Abbasi is good looking, charming in person and can act to some extent, as proven in Pyare Afzal, MHSA and Waar. He also has a right to an opinion but what’s fast becoming his Achille’s Heel is the judgement he all too readily passes on others. For someone who works in the entertainment industry, mutual respect for co-workers whether they are male, female, extras, item girls, gay, straight or bisexual, should be a given prerequisite. And if he has such a big problem with it all then maybe he should reconsider his career options. There is a huge market for evangelists on TV; HAB’s charms and good looks needn’t go waste.
