Beauty treatments that may freak you out

BEAUTY STATION

Does anyone doubt the rejuvenating powers of natural ingredients in beauty treatments? Entire generations swear by the antiseptic properties of sweet viscous honey or goat’s milk as a rinse for glowing skin. This list has been practiced and accepted for centuries but the weird and creepy has just advanced to another level. Popular facials these days - that is, treatments endorsed by gorgeous celebrities – use blood, venom, poop and placenta. How far would you go for better looking you?

Blood facial

We hope you’re not squeamish. If you want to benefit from the collagen-boosting abilities of your own blood, then be prepared to have blood drawn from your own arm and then injected back into your face through micro-needles. The blood facial, known affectionately as a ‘vampire facial’, involves separating your blood’s platelets into a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) using a centrifuge, combining the plasma with skin fillers like Restylane or Juvederm, and then injecting it into the face. The expected benefit is younger, firmer-looking skin.

Kim Kardashian went public with her love for blood facials in a scary selfie that we’ll save you the distress of viewing here. Though she said it was super painful, doctors say that it can be virtually painless. Maybe Kim played it up for the cameras?

Bird-poop facial

beckhams

Ever heard the old wives tale that it’s good fortune to have a bird defecate on your head? It turns out that might actually be lucky for you, if you’re up for some impromptu skin brightening. Bird excrement, when combined with rice bran, can be used to gently exfoliate your skin. Apparently, this is the centuries-old secret behind the porcelain complexions of Geishas. In the modern version, the bird dropping is powdered, mixed with rice bran, then turned into liquid form--and don’t worry, a UV light sanitizes it before it’s used on your face.

This untraditional facial is favoured by the gorgeous Beckhams!

Venom facial

Who would have thought that alternatives to botox needles would be venom? Thankfully, it doesn’t involve getting bit or stung! Snake bites paralyse their victims, so Swiss chemists replicate the effect on the skin with facials using their venom. Similarly, bee venom contains melittin, which sends signals to your body that it’s under attack, causing a surge of circulation and skin tightening collagen in the area.

Katie Holmes swears by the "muscle shocking" snake venom product called Sy-ake, which acts like a topical Botox, smoothing our wrinkles and relaxing facial muscles.

Placenta facial

If you can resist the urge to gag, consider applying the afterbirth of an unsuspecting sheep for an amazing anti-aging effect. The sheep-derived lotions and potions are combined with microdermabrasion and red light therapy (to boost circulation and collagen production) to improve maturity of young cells, creation of collagen and growth of elastin.

Eva Longoria is just one of many celebs who embrace the benefits of a placenta facial, which is rich in bio-stimulant and nutrients.
