Of course, every Oscar season is preceded by binge-watching of the films nominated for Best Picture. But let’s not forget the amazing music that has also made the cut in the Best Original Song category.
‘Everything is Awesome’ by Tegan and Sara ft. The Lonely Island (The Lego Movie)
Music and lyrics by Shawn Patterson
If there was ever an earworm that was as delightful as it was addictive, it has to be the super-buoyant ‘Everything is Awesome’. The Lego Movie may have been inexplicably snubbed in the Best Animated Feature category, but the sunny anthem of the little building blocks found a spot in the Best Original Song category.
‘Glory’ by John Legend & Common (Selma)
Music and lyrics by John Stephens and Lonnie Lynn
Considered a shoo-in for the winning song, the soulful ‘Glory’ recalls some of the most important moments of the Civil Rights movement from Rosa Parks to the protest marches that followed the Ferguson incident last year. Unfortunately, it’s little consolation for the Selma team whose only other nomination is Best Picture, while its cast and director were shut out of the other categories.
‘Grateful’ by Rita Ora (Beyond the Lights)
Music and lyrics by Diane Warren
Most people probably didn’t even know about the existence about the romantic drama Beyond the Lights until ‘Grateful’ popped up in the Best Original Song category. Diane Warren has previously written six songs nominated in the Best Original Song category- including Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing,’ LeAnn Rimes’s ‘How Do I Live’ and Celine Dion’s ‘Because You Loved Me’ - and has yet to win. Most critics feel that this year isn’t hers either, but the song is well worth a listen for its reminder of all things worth appreciating in life.
‘I’m Not Gonna Miss You’ by Glen Campbell (Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me)
Music and lyrics by Glen Campbell and Julian Raymond
Like his documentary I’ll Be Me, Glen Campbell’s devastating ballad - the last song the country music legend will ever release - details Campbell’s long struggle with Alzheimer’s. “You’re the last person I will love/You’re the last face I will recall/And best of all/I’m not gonna miss you,” Campbell sings on the truly poignant song. Sadly, Campbell’s disease has progressed to the point where he’s been admitted into a special care facility, meaning it’s very unlikely he would attend the Academy Awards.
‘Lost Stars’ by Adam Levine (Begin Again)
Music and lyrics by Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois
A song that drives the action of the plot, ‘Lost Stars’ is second to none in its integral value to its film. It is touted as the song that will be performed on stage on Sunday night, which should bring some star power to the Oscar stage if Maroon 5′s Adam Levine and Keira Knightley are recruited to perform it, as they did in Begin Again.
