Women of the moment

BEAUTY STATION

These five Oscar nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, 2014 have been praised to the skies for their impressive body of work. We’ve already seen the films and now thought we’d delve into their beauty secrets; perhaps a little karma and charisma will rub off! We still don’t know who’ll walk away with the Academy Award (will you tune into Star Movies at 5:30 PST to catch the ceremony live?) but from Parisian chic to British grunge, from dealing with red hair and freckles to looking gorgeous while playing the role of a disturbed sociopath, these women know what it takes to look great and we should be listening!

Marion Cottilard, 39

1-melvita

Being French means that she comes with the chic gene; Cottilard has never looked anything but impeccably gorgeous. It’s that effortless chic appeal that women all over the world lust for but very few may actually manage to attain. From her casual, wavy bob to her signature red lips, Cottilard is quite the red carpet favourite. However, it’s not all without help. Marion Cotillard’s favourite beauty product is a Hydrastim Moisturizer Gel from Melvita, which is a green brand started by a French beekeeper, and is one of the Oscar winner’s (she picked up the first trophy in 2007 for La Vie En Rose) most trusted.

2-Felicity-Jones
Felicity Jones, 31
2-Rosebud-Blush

She’s sporting a dishevelled, wavy bob these days and Felicity Jones is looking as much the British grunge beauty that she’s famed to be. She’s been cast in Burberry and she’s also been the face of Dolce & Gabbana cosmetics, one reason why she swears by the products. Her beauty favourites? "Dolce & Gabbana rosebud blush, Dolce & Gabbana black mascara, MAC Lip Balm in Clear, and a concealer. My bag always weighs a ton. I carry my whole bathroom with me. You never know what’s going to happen in a day!’

(Nominee, Best Performance by an Actress in a leading role for The Theory of Everything)

3-Julianne-Moore
Julianne Moore, 53

She’s an enviable, ageless beauty and believe it or not, Julianne Moore is as unconventional in her beauty regime as she is about the roles she chooses. Fair skin, red hair and freckles - not the ideal combination to live with but even at 53 the Emmy winner makes it look good. She credits sunblock and water as her basic tools, she believes ‘healthy juice cleanses’ to be an unnecessary fad and she prefers quiet yoga (in a room without mirrors) to noisy, boisterous workouts. Being the face of L’Oreal, Moore also confesses to a new addiction to face oils: "I love L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Glow Renewal Facial Oil and L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal Golden Serum," she says.

(Nominee, Best Performance by an Actress in a leading role for Still Alice)

Rosamund Pike, 36

4-Rosamund-Pike

She made a debut as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day (2002). Twelve years later, Pike plays the disturbing character of Amy Elliott-Dunne and picks up a nomination for it. Meanwhile, this porcelain skinned British blond manages to have two sons, Solo and Atom, and retain her figure and complexion throughout. She turned up at the Oscar luncheon in perfect shape, merely two months after having her second son. How does she manage it? Years of yoga, badminton and of course, great genes is what she gets by on. And her one beauty must-have? Believe it or not, an inexpensive bottle of Johnson’s Baby Oil is what the actress confesses to always keep handy.

(Nominee, Best Performance by an Actress in a leading role for Gone Girl)

Reese Witherspoon, 38
5-Reese-Witherspoon

Already an Oscar winner (for her role in Walk the Line, 2005) Witherspoon has won both critical acclaim as well as popularity. And at 38, with three kids (the eldest being 14) she is appreciated for her ageless beauty. Witherspoon’s fondness for luxury is no secret and neither is the fact that she frequently visits Dr. Harold Lancer, dermatologist to the stars. Apparently, what she gets are facials made from sheep placenta and gold flakes that are said to harness the power of the animal’s stem cells. The cells are extracted, flash-frozen then mixed into a gel containing gold flecks and other ingredients, which is spread over the face. "The stem cells are preserved because they are full of rich nutrients that fight free-radical damage to the skin and make it more radiant," Dr. Lancer claims.
