If you haven’t yet heard of a Pakistani band by the name of Soch, that’s about to change real soon. Adnan Dhool and Rabi Ahmed were among the young prodigies discovered through Nescafe Basement two years ago. Their song, ‘Awari’, spread like wildfire on social media and while it faded away from collective consciousness soon enough, it caught the attention across the border of one Mohit Suri. This is the same director who gave Atif Aslam his big Bollywood break by featuring ‘Aadat’ in his movie Kalyug and also kickstarted the Bollywood career of Roxen’s Mustafa Zahid.
‘Awari’, composed, written and sung by the boys from Soch, became part of the soundtrack of Suri’s Ek Villain and while the movie may not have done very well at the box office, it’s music struck a chord with the audience. Not only was it a commercial success, it was also hailed critically and the composers recently walked away with the Best Music Award at the Screen Awards recently. The nomination missed out Soch’s name, crediting only the other two composers, Mithoon and Ankit Tiwari, but Suri took to Twitter immediately after the announcement to rectify the omission and make sure that Soch got its share of the credit.
With the announcement last week of the Filmfare nominations, we’re happy to hear that Soch is also in the running for India’s most prestigious film awards in the category of Best Music, this time with their name squarely in the limelight. Whether they win or not, they are set to go places in Bollywood given how well their debut offering has been received. With a Pakistani movie under their belt and the promise of several new Bollywood projects, the Soch boys are our Hotsteppers for the Week for proving that despite the lack of a platform in Pakistan, local musical talent is alive and kicking.
