Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad receive major boost of foreign stars for playoffs
The HBL Pakistan Super League Season 10 was all set to resume with full fervour on May 17, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced a revised schedule for the tournament’s remaining matches.
The PSL has returned to action in Rawalpindi and Lahore following a temporary suspension prompted by escalating tensions between Pakistan and India - a conflict that was swiftly deescalated by Pakistan’s armed forces.
This marks a significant moment for Pakistan cricket, not just because of the resumption of its flagship T20 league, but also as a display of resilience, unity, and defiance in the face of adversity.
The decision to restart the tournament within Pakistan, despite logistical and security concerns, highlights the PCB’s commitment to preserving the league’s integrity and ensuring fans across the country experience the magic of PSL on home soil.
Initially, the remaining matches were set to be shifted to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to security concerns. However, following a directive from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and successful military response neutralising external threats, the PCB chose to suspend the league rather than relocate. This brave decision paved the way for PSL’s comeback in its home cities.
The tournament’s restart was rescheduled for May 17 at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, with a clash between Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi. The action continues with a double-header on May 18 (Sunday) as Quetta Gladiators face Multan Sultans in the afternoon, followed by Lahore Qalandars vs Peshawar Zalmi in the evening. Rawalpindi will host its final match on May 19 when Islamabad United vie against Karachi Kings.
After the group stages, the tournament shifts to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore for the playoffs. The Qualifier is scheduled for May 21, followed by Eliminator 1 on May 22 and Eliminator 2 on May 23. The grand finale of PSL-10 will take place on May 25 in Lahore, bringing down the curtain on what has been an eventful and emotionally charged season.
Despite the break in play, the cricketing spirit remains unbroken. Franchises have worked tirelessly during the hiatus to address player availability concerns, especially the foreign player exodus that threatened to derail team plans.
As the PSL was all set to resume on May 17 with high-stakes fixtures in Rawalpindi and Lahore, participating franchises have reinforced their squads with key international signings, setting the stage for an electrifying finish.
Defending champions Lahore Qalandars, fighting for a playoff spot, have brought in two seasoned international cricketers. Sri Lankan power-hitter Bhanuka Rajapaksa replaces Tom Curran, who is sidelined due to an ankle injury. Rajapaksa, known for his aggressive style, previously represented Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 8.
Rajapaksa expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “It’s an honour to step in and represent Lahore Qalandars at such a key stage of the tournament. I’ve followed the PSL closely and know how competitive and intense it can be. I’m ready to give it everything for the team and hopefully help push for a strong finish.”
Additionally, former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan strengthens Lahore’s spin attack and overall balance.
Shakib, widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers. His T20 record is formidable, with 7,438 runs and 492 wickets, including career-best bowling figures of 6 for 6. His arrival is expected to strengthen Lahore Qalandars’ squad depth as they approach the final stages of the group round.
Expressing his excitement, Shakib said: “I’m really happy to join Lahore Qalandars for the ongoing PSL season. We’re at a crucial stage of the competition where every game counts. It’s a tournament I’ve always enjoyed watching, and now I’m looking forward to contributing on the field. Qalandars have great fans and a strong team spirit, and I’m excited to be a part of the group as we push for a strong finish.”
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean all-rounder Sikandar Raza was also likely to rejoin the Qalandars squad, further strengthening their Lahore Qalandars’ lineup.
With these key additions, Lahore Qalandars aim to make a strong push in the final phase of PSL 10.
With only one league match remaining against Peshawar Zalmi, these additions could prove decisive.
Quetta Gladiators, the current table-toppers, have made strategic additions to sustain momentum. Sri Lankans Avishka Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal join the squad along with Afghanistan’s Gulbadin Naib, filling gaps left by Sean Abbott and Kyle Jamieson. Crucially, Rilee Rossouw and Finn Allen have confirmed their availability, ensuring Quetta enters the playoffs with a well-rounded, experienced unit.
Islamabad United’s title aspirations received a massive push with the confirmation of five foreign stars. England’s Alex Hales and South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen are joined by Australian left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis, New Zealand’s Jimmy Neesham, and English pacer Tymal Mills. This mix of firepower and balance could propel United to a record-equalling fourth PSL title.
Karachi Kings have introduced Scottish T20 maestro George Munsey to their line-up. Known for his explosive hitting and global league experience, Munsey’s PSL debut comes at a time when Karachi are pushing for a top-two finish. With over 2,000 T20I runs at a strike rate above 140, he adds serious intent at the top of the order.
The return of PSL-10 is more than just the continuation of a cricket league; it is a symbolic revival of national morale. After political and military tension cast a shadow over the tournament, its comeback in Rawalpindi and Lahore is a celebration of peace, sport, and resilience. For cricket lovers across Pakistan and beyond, the remainder of the PSL promises high-octane action, emotional moments, and a grand culmination of one of the most memorable seasons in the league’s history.
However the more crucial match after the resumption of PSL-10 in Rawalpindi seems to be between the Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalim on May 18 which is going to have a do or die situation for both the outfits. Lahore Qalandars stand at the crucial stage at the moment and a defeat for them may be a last nail in the coffin. For Zalmi a victory against Lahore could get them a berth in the playoffs.
