ocated on Rattigan Road, close to the shrine of Data Ganj Bakhsh, Bradlaugh Hall is a 19th-Century monument. This is the place where the All India National Congress’s resolution for India’s independence was passed. This is also where Bhagat Singh and his comrades met and studied. The place was also visited by MA Jinnah, Allama Iqbal, JL Nehru, MK Gandhi and other noted politicians of the early 20th Century.
It’s unfortunate that a place with so much history should have fallen into disrepair. In 2023, the Walled City of Lahore Authority initiated restoration work on the building, with an estimated budget of Rs 60 million. It involved “consolidating the structure, replacing rusted corrugated roofing sheets, replacing structural columns, installing a new drainage system and clearing illegal encroachments on the surroundings.”
According to the WCLA website, the restoration was scheduled to complete last year. But when a TNS colleague visited the place recently, they weren’t impressed. A lot still needs to be done.
