Pakistan golf in 2024: achievements and optimism

Golf, once regarded as an elite sport in Pakistan, has steadily gained popularity among broader segments of society, emerging as a competitive and inclusive activity. Today, it thrives as a robust sport for enthusiasts at national and international levels, even making its mark on the global stage.

To sustain this momentum, those at the helm of golfing affairs must remain proactive year-round, ensuring players are engaged through top-tier tournaments and providing world-class facilities nationwide. For Pakistan’s golfers to excel and earn accolades on the international stage, they must be exposed to maximum competitive opportunities on the finest courses available.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of the Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF), its affiliated units, and an increasing number of golf clubs, the sport has transcended its traditional strongholds. New golf courses are being established across the country, signaling the expansion of golf’s reach and appeal. This growing infrastructure lays a strong foundation for Pakistan to nurture talent and aspire for greater success on the global golfing landscape.

The year 2024 has marked a significant chapter in Pakistan’s golfing history. Thanks to the proactive initiatives of the PGF and its dynamic leadership, the professional golf scene in the country has experienced unprecedented growth. Spearheaded by the PGF President, Honorary Secretary, and the Manager Operations, the federation ensured ample opportunities for players across the spectrum, fulfilling their competitive aspirations and elevating the sport’s stature.

A Year of Vibrant
Competitions

This year’s robust golf calendar, crafted in collaboration with provincial golf bodies from Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Balochistan, and the Federal Territory, featured 16 open championships held at premier golf courses nationwide. With prize money reaching an impressive PKR 150 million, professional golfers displayed outstanding performances.

Leading the charge was Pakistan’s top-ranked professional, Muhammad Shabbir Iqbal, whose exceptional skills and consistency ensured his dominance throughout the year. Shabbir’s victories, achieved through his unparalleled expertise, solidified his reputation as a formidable golfer while securing significant financial rewards.

Other notable players were Muhammad Munir, Matloob Ahmed, Hamza Amin, Waheed Baloch, and Ahmed Baig, alongside emerging talents like Muhammad Saqib and Muhammad Shahzad. Ahmed Baig, just 24, shone brightly, clinching the prestigious title of Pakistan Golf Champion.

A Rising Star on the
Asian Tour

Ahmed’s meteoric rise reflects his technical prowess and unwavering determination. His performance earned him a coveted spot on the 2025 Asian Tour, making him a beacon of hope for Pakistani golf on the international stage. This remarkable journey has been supported by the PGF and his mentors, showcasing the federation’s commitment to nurturing talent.

Development Tours Revitalise Golf’s Second Tier

The introduction of the Jinnah Development Tour, a platform for second-tier professionals, breathed new life into the sport.

These tournaments have given many players a chance to refine their skills and make their mark. The initiative ensures a steady pipeline of talent, creating a bridge between amateur and professional golf.

Amateurs and Women Shine

Amateurs and women also made notable strides in 2024. Among the amateurs, players such as Salman Jehangir, Qasim Ali Khan, and Shamir Majid displayed remarkable potential. In the women’s category, golfers like Parkha Ijaz, Rimsha Ijaz, and Hamna Amjad proved their mettle, becoming role models for aspiring female athletes.

A Golfing Heaven

Pakistan’s climate and terrain offer an ideal environment for year-round golf. Punjab and KPK boast world-class golf courses, attracting both local and international players. Islamabad’s courses are especially popular among diplomats, who enjoy the city’s serene golfing atmosphere.

With 47 existing courses and five more under development, Pakistan’s golfing infrastructure is steadily expanding. Prestigious venues like the DHA Golf Club in Karachi, Royal Palm Golf Course in Lahore, and the newly inaugurated Rumanza Golf Course in Multan are setting new benchmarks.

A Jewel in the Crown

The Rumanza Golf Course, designed by the legendary Sir Nick Faldo, has redefined golf standards in Pakistan. Spanning 270 acres and featuring distinct desert, wetland, and woodland zones, this state-of-the-art facility has already captivated international visitors, including members of England’s cricket team. The course is poised to host international tournaments in the coming years, elevating Pakistan’s profile on the global golfing map.

Leadership and Vision

The success of 2024 owes much to the dedicated efforts of PGF leadership, including Lt. Gen. Qazi Muhammad Ikram (Retd), Vice Presidents AVM Tariq Mehmood Ghazi and Khurram Khan, and Honorary Secretary Brig. Sajid Akram (Retd). Their vision and commitment have been instrumental in driving the sport forward.

The Road Ahead

While 2024 has been transformative, the absence of international tournaments on home soil remains a gap that needs addressing. With the foundation laid this year, 2025 holds promise for Pakistan to become a hub for international golf events. The PGF is expected to capitalise on this momentum, ensuring that the country’s golfing achievements continue to soar.

In summary, the year 2024 has been a testament to Pakistan’s growing potential as a golfing nation.

From nurturing talent to developing world-class facilities, the progress achieved reflects a bright future for the sport. The journey ahead is challenging but filled with promise, as Pakistan aspires to make its mark in the global golfing arena.
