Suiting up again

“I

t’s hard to imagine having to wait so long to see your show get that kind of recognition,” Patrick J Adams half-joked, but he was also right. While successful in its day, Suits surprised everyone by breaking records last year. It racked up 57.7 billion minutes of viewing — the highest year-end total Nielsen has ever recorded in its four years of releasing annual streaming totals. The show set records for the most weeks (15) and most consecutive weeks (12) as the No 1 overall title in the Nielsen rankings. Its success led its creator, Aaron Korsh and NBC-Universal to start working on a new Suits show titled Suits LA, reportedly starting shooting in March 2024. If production goes well, Suits LA could debut before the end of 2024 or at the beginning of 2025.

The original Suits starred Patrick J Adams as con man-turned-lawyer Mike Ross, who became the young protégé to Gabriel Macht’s legal shark, Harvey Specter, at a top NYC firm. The legal drama ran from 2011 to 2019 and also starred Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson, Rick Hoffman as Louis Litt, Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulsen and Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane (before she married Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex).

At its core, Suits revolved around the partnership between lawyer Harvey Specter and the brilliant but fraudulent Mike Ross. Together, they navigated the complexities of corporate law, often bending the rules to secure victories for their clients while delving into themes of loyalty, ambition and moral ambiguity. The series was appreciated for its sharp, witty dialogue and the chemistry between its characters. Whether it’s Harvey’s quick comebacks or Donna’s sage advice, the banter added to the charm of the show.

Jessica’s character was deemed powerful enough to have its own spin-off titled Pearson, created by Aaron Korsh and Daniel Arkin, which premiered on the USA Network in July 2019. The offshoot followed disbarred Jessica Pearson as she became involved in the dirty world of Chicago politics, taking on the role of right-hand fixer for the city’s mayor. The show was eventually cancelled in October 2019 after one season.

The new iteration, Suits LA, will follow Ted Black — played by Arrow star Stephen Amell - a former federal prosecutor from New York who has moved to Los Angeles to build his own powerful law firm with old friend Stuart Lane while reinventing himself by representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles.

The new iteration, Suits LA, will follow Ted Black - played by Arrow star Stephen Amell - a former federal prosecutor from New York who has moved to Los Angeles to build his own powerful law firm with old friend Stuart Lane while reinventing himself by representing the most powerful clients in Los Angeles. “His firm is at a crisis point and to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and one another while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved,” reads the logline. Walking Dead alum Josh McDermitt has been cast as self-absorbed lawyer Stuart Lane, Black’s partner at the firm Black Lane Law. The character of young upstart lawyer Erica Rollins will be played by Lex Scott Davis.

Since the new show is not a revival of the original series, characters from the original cast might show up in some episodes from time to time, not only to kickstart the new series but also to keep the momentum and interest going. The original cast has shown interest in this, with Adams stating, “It’s a show in the Suits universe, like a Suits LA, if I got the phone call, I’m ready to suit up again.” It remains to be seen whether the audience will like the new series enough for him and others to suit up again or not.
