Things that shook us this year

If you thought 2020 was a clownshow, 2023 had more tricks up its sleeve.

Things that shook us this year

Nepo babies being nepo babies

While it never is surprising when a celebrity type says something they think is edgy af, but is really just tone deaf af, sometimes you want to tell them to sit down and see what they’re actually doing. Hailey Bieber, best-known for being a Baldwin and the girl Justin Bieber ricocheted off to every time he broke up with Selena Gomez, wore a shirt with the legend ‘nepo baby’ on it, because that was her ‘response’ to be being called a nepo baby. The nepo baby on a tee joke is only funny if your parents were solidly middle-class, and their influence only succeeded in getting you out-of-season mangoes that one time. Otherwise, check your privilege and don’t even joke about it.

Meanwhile, a fire rages on in Palestine

How can we describe how fully surreal but crap this year felt without talking about this? Israel, in retaliation to attacks by Islamist organization Hamas, launched unrelenting attacks on Gaza in Palestine. We can all go blue in the face arguing context (there is so much, 56 years worth), or we can cite religion or race as the perpetuating factors, but if you remove all of that, what remains is close to 90 days of Gaza being under siege with an unprecedented number or deaths and war crime. When it becomes a humanitarian issue, it definitely makes you wonder how the world’s leaders and policymakers allow massacre to continue at this scale, with currently no reprieve being offered in any way.

Koffee With Karan being the flag bearer of nepotism as always

We realize that Karan Johar can’t help being friends with the industry he’s literally grown up in, but that’s just always going to be a fun line to say. That said, what was that episode with Kajol and Rani Mukherjee? Kajol really seemed like she didn’t want to be there, Rani Mukherjee had that cousin-scared-of-the-family’s-baji energy, and Karan Johar kept trying to get Kajol to open up and it was all just very blah. Soz. Kuch kuch bilkul nahi hua, Karan.

Royal babies being royal babies

Things that shook us this year

Prince Harry, whose last name one really can’t be bothered googling, (it’s Henry Charles Albert David, one is not a nepo baby and has no privilege and only has one’s knowledge as currency), narrated a book that some guy who writes celeb bios wrote for him and we just found out way too much about how Prince Harry’s mind works. While the royal family - and Princess Diana and her kids in particular - have been hounded by the paparazzi and scrutinized to no end and that must have been a traumatic way to grow up, one can’t help but feel that Prince Harry spend a lot of time feeling sad about his life, and that really isn’t the British way, is it, Henry?

Matthew Perry and the one where he made us all cry

Things that shook us this year

There has to be a better way to explain why Mathew Perry is as important as he is to adults of a certain age, but apart from saying he starred in a show we all really loved, what can we say? Except that description diminishes the impact the show, his character, and frequent public struggle with addiction also had on his fans. Despite that, Perry did not want that to be his eternal calling card.

“The best thing about me, bar none, is that if somebody comes to me and says, ‘I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?’ I can say ‘yes’ and follow up and do it,” he said. “When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing that’s mentioned. I want that to be the first thing that’s mentioned. And I’m gonna live the rest of my life proving that.”
