irected by Iram Parveen Bilal, and produced by Apoorva Bakshi and Abid Aziz Merchant along with the director herself, Wakhri is a story inspired by the late internet sensation Qandeel Baloch. Bilal has previously stated that Baloch’s story had moved the Wakhri team into creating a similar story, albeit with a happier ending.

Wakhri stars Faryal Mehmood in the titular role, along with the stellar Saleem Meraj and Akbar Islam, as well as Bakht-awar Mazhar who has absolutely hit it out of the park with her film work this year.

Some trivia:

While we are very happy for the cast and crew of Wakhri, our favorite thing associated with the film at the moment is the director’s name. Iram Parveen Bilal is a very fun name to say out loud if you insist on always saying it in its entirety, which we are sure is how it ended up with Kareena Kapoor’s character’s name in the 2012 film, Agent Vinod.

Journalist and writer Sanam Maher wrote a non-fictional book on the internet sensation called The Sensational Life and Death of Qandeel Baloch, which was first published in 2018.

A drama serial, loosely based on the story of the slain internet sensation was also made with Saba Qamar in the titular role. It was called Baaghi and featured other high-profile actors such as Ali Kazmi, Sarmad Khoosat and Osman Khalid Butt.
