Style File: Glam in green: but who wore it better?

October 1, 2023

It’s not entirely fair to pit against each other the ‘Queen of K’, as she crowns herself, and the one-time Miss of the world, but if not style and celeb royalty, then who? We ask this sincerely. Please pigeon us your ideas. While we absentmindedly went over Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Instagram a few days ago, our brain couldn’t help but think of one of Frieha Altaf’s recent wedding-guest looks when we saw one of Aishwarya’s Cannes looks from earlier this year. Here’s what we know about them:

Style File: Glam in green: but who wore it better?

Frieha Altaf in Nomi Ansari

At a recent wedding in London, Frieha wore this stunning emerald sari by none other than Nomi Ansari, who does rather like his sequins and shimmers. Not to digress too much, but the costumes he did for performers at the Lux Style Awards in 2021 were actual, real, legit eye candy. Shiny things make us happy.

We must also credit Frieha with wearing this sari particularly well, looking like the proverbial hourglass in the drape. Her hair, makeup, and accessories are also on-point, and we love the yellow-gold eye and cheek highlights.

Aishwarya Rai in Valentino

Pierpaolo Piccioli sent down a very [comparatively] understated collection for Valentino’s SS23, which was neutrals and sheaths and androgyny, except for where all of that was interjected with what is always called a ‘pop of color’. While the collection was hailed as utterly beautiful and well-done by critics, when Aishwarya Rai wore this particular dress at Cannes this year, which Hindustan Times alleges was roundly panned by ‘netizens’ as being too Christmas tree-y.

While the dress is great, and the hair and makeup is also full marks, we have to request anyone and everyone to please leave the lucite footwear way back in 2000 when the only acceptable way to wear it was as a platform slide if you were a Spice Girl. Clear shoes are an affront to the evolution of human style, so pls ladies, chuck them out, and your furry slides too, while you’re at it.

The gown is meant to be fluid and flow, but the fact it wasn’t giving Aishwarya a defined silhouette is what our good friends, the netizens, took issue with. We think she looks good, and the gown is draping the way it is meant to. We however do not agree with the Sophie Couture bow and hood and aluminum gown she walked the red carpet in later, which is only okay to wear if your name is Malificent and you want to hand out poisoned apples to everyone.

Verdict: They both wore it better! Keep doin’ you, ladies.
