April 16, 2023

Summer is pretty much synonymous with big budget Hollywood blockbusters, and 2023 promises to keep the tradition going with several high adrenaline adventures from some of the world’s most popular franchises.

Fast X

The primary cast returns for the tenth – TENTH! – and possibly penultimate chapter in the Fast & Furious series, as Dom (Vin Diesel) tries to protect his crew from criminal mastermind Cipher (Charlize Theron) and the sadistic Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) who is out for revenge.

With a US$340 million budget, Fast X is one of the most expensive films ever made. And how even are there ten – TEN!! – Fast & Furious movies? We don’t know. But someone must be doing something right, seeing how this franchise is still minting money.

Directed by Louis Leterrier (replacing Justin Lin who left production due to creative differences), Fast X will be out on May 19. A sequel, intended to be the main series’ finale, is also in development.

Transformers:
Rise of the Beasts

Paramount and Hasbro are resurrecting the Transformers for yet another outing. This one – the seventh in the film series – serves as a standalone sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee and is reportedly influenced by the Beast Wars storyline.

The movie follows a pair of archaeologists (Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback) who go on a globe-trotting adventure with the Autobots. And while Bumblebee was cute (albeit painfully derivative), this is still the Transformers so it might be best to keep our expectations in check.

Rise of the Beasts arrives in cinemas this June.

Indiana Jones and the
Dial of Destiny

The final instalment in the current Indiana Jones series comes to the big screen this summer as Harrison Ford reprises the titular role for the last time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

The wonderful Phoebe Waller-Bridge joins the cast as Indy’s goddaughter who drags her godfather on an adventure set against the backdrop of the Space Race in the late 1960s.

James Mangold helms the project that is expected to be released on June 30.

Mission: Impossible –
Dead Reckoning Part One

After accomplishing six “impossible” missions, Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is back for another fast-paced action-fest. And this instalment just might actually live up to the franchise’s name, seeing how it is the first of two films that will together serve as a send-off to the protagonist.

Cruise continues to deliver impressive stunts while Hayley Atwell enters the franchise as a character with ambiguous loyalties.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One comes out on July 14. Part Two is set to be released in June next year and is expected to be Cruise’s final appearance in the series.
