Six degrees of separation

The music being made by Pakistani artists in and around the country is ahead of the curve as we welcome the New Year.

Six degrees of separation

I

f you’ve been wondering about Asim Azhar’s bouncy, new song, ‘Sona Chandni’ that has appeared in the new year as part of Velo Sound Station, well, you’re not the only one. It’s actually one of his better songs. But where does this story begin?

As executive producer of the song, Bilal Maqsood, confirmed that while he is not doing another season of Velo Sound Station, the Asim Azhar song is part of the debut season. Though it couldn’t be released at that point, it has passed certain parameters and was thus released.

Asim Azhar had composed the song and written the lyrics and with a rough sketch, he had approached Bilal Maqsood. Under his complete supervision, the song began to take form as it was produced by Haroon Sheikh and Usman Sheikh - who work with Bilal Maqsood.

Could there be another song in the wings? Possibly. Until then you can groove to the song that fits perfectly with the sound of Velo Sound Station’s debut season and is one of the most attractive songs in Asim Azhar’s repertoire of songs.

And while we are on the subject of Bilal Maqsood, just when I had made up by mind that a song like ‘Thak Sa Gaya Hoon’ by Bilal Maqsood didn’t exactly need a music video, a music video for the song dropped. What none of us saw coming is how beautifully the music video would connect to the song upon even just one viewing.

As Bilal Maqsood confessed it was a very simple video. Simple, it is said, can be beautiful. On this occasion, it is.

The single-take music video features no one except Bilal Maqsood before the camera, in an outdoor setting, giving every line - to a very personal song - a level of quiet emotion and allowing the camera to capture a level of vulnerability never seen before. A song that appears as a lullaby is so strong that its visuals could’ve easily been destroyed and its beauty tarnished. But credit must go to Bilal Maqsood, who performed it and Zohaib Kazi, who directed it, for never losing sight of their mission and not damaging the song by giving it an unnecessary, elaborate narrative.

Between ‘Thak Sa Gaya Hoon’s audio release followed by its music video, Mr. Bilal Maqsood, is still pretty busy.

He was also a part of the launch of Red Bull Off The Roof, which took place in Lahore and will be coming to YouTube as a series and where the idea was first introduced.

What is the idea?

The idea is that instead of going to a concert, a bus with its stage on its roof will go to fans in different cities around the country. The stage will go to the audience rather than the audience coming to a stage.

Bilal Maqsood, who was part of the launch event has also done a promotional song for the show called ‘Dheem Tana’, with the music video being directed by Zohaib Kazi. Beyond the song and the introduction to the project at the Lahore event, Bilal Maqsood is not involved in any sort of production capacity.

As for Mr. Zohaib Kazi, he, too, is gearing up to release new content in 2023. Huzzah for music!
