This Week in Music

Looking back on the week that was, it feels as if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s marital union was the only thing that happened in the universe; that’s what you’d think, given the way local celebrities were reacting on social media in addition to the incessant barrage of coverage paid to the ‘fairytale’ by the media at large. However, a lot more emerged this week and Instep brings you the lowdown.

Ali Hamza goes old world

Coke Studio, over the years, has seen some fairly bizarre clothing choices by artists. Over time, the focus on fashion has come to describe the personality of the artists, or so we hope. While Coke Studio 11, produced in 2018 by Ali Hamza and Zohaib Kazi, is probably months away, a recent image shared by Ali Hamza (on Instagram) showcased, not only his diverse and personal style but also made us just as curious about the upcoming season.

Standing in the sun in a traditional kurta, he shared the image with the words, ‘Work Mode in Full Swing!’ and Hamza looks every bit the artist he is but also how he has grown personally. ‘Wardrobe designed by Munib Nawaz’ also shows the strong the comfort level between the artist and the designer.

Farhad Humayun and Riot Studios

In other local news, Levis Live 2 is all set to return and once again, Overload leader, chief singer-songwriter and music producer, is at the helm of things. "Directing, producing and shooting a video for Round 2 of Levis Live," stated Native Rock in an Instagram post, which featured Farhad in work mode. This is good news because a new season is well on its way. Past participants include Maria Unera, Moroo, Ali Noor and many others.

Zeb Bangash and Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami

The past week also saw an iconic collaboration between Salt Arts, who were celebrating their 50th live show with a performance and storytelling by Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami, presented by Zeb Bangash, who is both disciple of the great Saami (along with Ali Sethi) and an accomplished singer-songwriter and music composer as well. In the spiritual month, no better way to spend your nights than falling into the transcendence created by qawwali moments.
