In Ink We Trust
Nothing quite screams individuality like turning your body into a personal canvas. Tattoos can make some truly head-turning statements about where you’re from, who you’re with and what you believe in – until life takes a U-turn and one of those things changes. Still, we believe in living in the moment, and tattoos are a great way of telling the world something about your self in the now; better yet, exploit the cryptic nature of the image and keep ‘em guessing.
ScarJo’s rising sun tattoo
Tattoos tend to be a black-and-grey affair, which is why we love the refreshing pop of colour on Scarlett Johansson’s forearm. Popularly known as her rising sun tattoo, that little picture of dawn with its bright skies, flying birds and the bright blue ocean oozes feel-good vibes, symbolising hope and new beginnings. It’s no wonder that ScarJo has said that her tattoo makes her happy; who wouldn’t want to wake up to a bright sunrise, no matter how dreary the weather outside?
Sushmita Sen’s life motto
The self-proclaimed ink addict Sushmita Sen is the proud wearer of seven tattoos. Interestingly, many of them are phrases that hold some significance for her, which she’s emblazoned across her skin like notes to self for the world to see. We liked the tattoo on her forearm the best: it reads a Latin phrase ‘Aut viam inveniam aut faciam’, which means "I’ll either find a way or make one." Sush explained that it’s a dictum that she lives by; we think it should be everyone’s life motto.
Sadaf Malaterre’s butterfly
We’ve eye-spied tattoos on many a model on the runway – but quirky fashion designer Sadaf Malaterre’s butterfly tattoo we especially love. Unique for its placement (we’ve seen too many of those lower back ones for anybody’s lifetime) and the simplicity of the design, this is Sadaf turning her penchant for butterflies that are a constant in her designs into permanent body art.
Cara Delevinge’s tiny tattoos
Some people draw attention for their imposing inks, but some of Cara Delevingne’s tattoos stand out for their tiny scale. Tucked into unexpected places, like the inside of her ear, her tattoos are inspired by her trend-setting best gal pal Rihanna, who held her hand when she was getting her first one. The diamond tattoo mimics Rihanna’s inside-the-ear star tattoo, and is considered to be tribute to RiRi’s Diamonds tour.
