Election Commission biggest hurdle to real democracy: Siraj

Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Sirajul Haq has said the country was facing a chain of crises because of the incompetence and apathy of the rulers while the Election Commission was the biggest hurdle in the way of real democracy. 

Addressing the Ijtima of the women wing of JI Karachi on Tuesday by telephone, Sirajul Haq said the western colonialism was bent on destroying the social fabric of the Muslim societies and spreading anarchy in the name of women emancipation. He impressed upon the women folk to play an effective role to safeguard their moral values and stability in society. 

He said the masses were suffering from hunger, poverty and fear as the elite ruling the country were not ready to give the common man the right to lead a respectable living. It was the responsibility of the government to provide education, health, shelter and jobs to the masses but the rulers were paying little attention to that. He said 70 per cent of people were not getting pure drinking water while loadshedding of electricity and gas was increasing. 

The JI chief said the masses were perturbed over the attitude of the rulers but they did not find a way out of the prevailing situation as corrupt elite managed to come to power again and again because of the corrupt electoral system. He said if the Election Commission did not introduce electoral reforms and failed to enforce the code of conduct for elections, the percentage of voting would come down further as people were fast losing interest in polls. Sirajul Haq said that the women constituted fifty one per cent of the country’s population. He said Islam gave high status to the women as in their capacity as mothers, sisters and daughters but the west was trying hard to destroy Muslim societies. He urged the women to rise for the protection of their values. 

He urged the members of the JI women wing to mobilise women in Karachi to vote honest and able leadership in order to get rid of the corrupt mafia presently in power. The JI chief said Karachi was mini Muslim world and mini Pakistan. People from all parts of the country were residing in Karachi.  He expressed the confidence that Karachi would once again emerge as the city of lights and time would soon come when the menace of target killing, extortion and dead bodies stuffed in gunny bags would come to an end.
