Wheat stock lying in open going to waste in Charsadda
CHARSADDA: Thousands of kilograms of wheat are going to waste due to the negligence of officials of the District Food Department as the sacks filled with staple grain have been stocked under the open sky. Social and political circles have asked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister and chief secretary to take notice of the issue as the province is already faced with a severe shortage of wheat.
It was revealed during a visit to the District Grain Godown that hundreds of wheat sacks had been stored in the open and only covered with a tarpaulin in this heavy rain. Again, a 100kg wheat sacks were placed on the tarpaulin so the stock could not be uncovered during the winds. According to experts of grains, the wheat stock could either get wet by rainwater or moist if properly not covered in this heavy rain.
They said that flour made from the wet or soggy grains was substandard and injurious for human consumption. It may be mentioned the residents of Charsadda had recently appealed to Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister to take notice of substandard and unhygienic wheat flour being supplied across the district.
